So what are the pros and cons of each and which is best out of the N/A or the TD?

TD has a bit more power but has a reputation for being unreliable - can't say I agree with that cos I've had a few and never had any bother but maybe I'm just jammy or maybe its because I like to service my vehicles regularly :wink:
Mate of mine has a 90 with a n/a (and it's not for sale either ! :lol: ) and it plods along fine style as long as you are in no particular hurry - off road it's fine cos mainly in low box by then and lower power is not so noticeable
Fuel consumption is about the same so thet's not really an issue
Don't mess about with these smelly things Leigh - you know you want a V8 :lol:

Have a good look Leigh - there's plenty out there
a lot of cr8p and some good 'uns - I ALWAYS buy on condition and never on age , you can usually get a feel for whether it's been looked after or not by talking to the owner
The mate I was telling you about with the n/a diesel - it's a 1990 on a g plate csw with dog guard and m/t tyres - had been lying in a field for a year and needed 2 outriggers and all the brakes stripped and cleaned (rear crossmember had been changed about 2 years ago)
Total cost with a fresh mot including purchase £480!!!!!   :shock:

if would steer clear of the na and the td and go for a tdi, they are just so much better - if u look thru the adds affordable ones do appear these days.

just look in autotrader or something like that - steer clear of the lr mags if u want a real bargain!

Yep, i agree..... i am lucky enough to have the use of both an "ex-MoD" 2.5N/A & a 300tdi...
The 2.5N/A is fine if you want to SLOWLY TRUNDLE along in the countryside... no power steering, noisy, BUT parts are easily attained & it will keep going forever as long as you keep on top of all the little regular jobs like greasing/lubricating and general servicing.
The 300tdi is an excellent allrounder :D , got the power/speed to prevent cyclists overtaking you on a steep hill, the engine is easily worked on at home "for basic mechanicly skilled folk", it is slightly quieter than a 2.5N/A and also has power steering for those carpark manouvers.

I've got a 2.5 NA, when I got it 2 years ago it was an upgrade for my SIII 2.25 deisel and it was so quick it was unbelieveble.  Even manged to do 70mph on M69!

Having had it 2 years I am now looking round for a 200Tdi to drop in it, sick of having to pedal when going up hills.

The 2.5NA D is a fine reliable engine with adequate peformance and good economy. I have to admit that for an old engine mine might have had a headstart in as much as it was rebuilt by the MOD just prior to being cast but in 5-years all I had to do was replace the glow-plugs because one had failed, other than that it was just basic servicing and it never missed a beat.
If they don't come with PAS (and some do) then fitting it is is an easy enough job that doesn't cost more than a couple of hundred pounds.

A lot of people say to ignore the older engine and go for the TDi but if you just want a reliable engine which is cheap to buy, easy to fit, will give years of service and return good economy then the NA D has a lot to commend it. Not everyone want to drive their LR everywhere at 80MPH+.
Although I enjoy my 300TDI I also enjoyed my NA D and never found it lacking.

2.5 na is ok for most things but hills boy do they hate hills. Went up  derbyshire the other day in ours nice drive there but nightmare, one hills was 20mph up. Give me tdi any day :wink:

a good point dave,  if if are playing around an offroad site or greenlaning a na will be just fine, its the roads in between where the motor can be tiring.

before my tdi I had a na , then plopped a td into with power steering, the difference was amazing, I didnt need to drive around with the window open so that i could get the extra leverage on the steering wheel!

I did find thought that the td was more tempramental and ran hotter - also heard of a few people where theyre td engines have given up, but then again some people have ones that seem to last.

My TD is fine, although saying that it was rebuilt about 20,000 miles before i bought it so it is still quite fresh.

Well turner rebilt this 12,000 miles ago but it still did 20 up that hill.
 Ps was a big hill and on the flat it will do 75. Dont get me wrong i am happy with it but if it had a V8 auto in it i would be a lot more happy :wink:  :D
