setting swivel pin bearings

(1/4) > >>

nickW:
looking in the haynes manual it says to set the swivel pin bearings using a spring balance, well i haven't got a spring balance so is there a way of setting it by feel

its a disco 1

Henry Webster:
You can, but its difficult t describe and comes with experience.  Spring balances are pretty cheap from a fishing tackle shop and if you keep with LRs you'll need it more than once!

nickW:
well is it loose  or should there be some resistance

Henry Webster:
Shouldn't be loose, shouldn't be too much resistance.  See what I mean?!

I think the manual says that you need about 1.3-1.6 kgs of pull.  Difficult to judge if you've never done one before and it makes a huge difference to the way the vehicle behaves.  This set up has a large bearing on steering shake.

IIRC the swivel seal makes quite a bit of difference, without it it's a matter of a few LBs (I seem to remeber it's about the same as a pint of water, maybe justy over).

You can do it with a weight on a string running over a pulley, but the spring balance is best.
