Which engine... please help me decide!

Mickey:
Sorry forgot to add that the Audi engines are both 5 Cylinder... the 2.2 is the same as the motor which came in the very last of the UR Quattro's but with more power...

1.9 TDi is possible but would mean buying a load more kit (Syncro TD engine and gearbox bellhousing). Also available for the 1.9 TDi is a mechanical TDi pump but they are £7-800 !!

I drove a Subaru engined Syncro (2.5 N/A, thanks Richard http://www.rjes.com) today... very quiet and smooth and lots of torque but had a look underneath and saw the stock sump sticking down about 5 inches from the rest of the engine so that would need shortening. http://members.mud-club.com/galleryimages/389ca4c18177d2f98354eb8b95da7ebb

I already have the 2.5 TDi engine (just taken it out of the Crewcab Syncro) and the 2.2 20V 5 Cyl engine with the bits needed to fit either engine to the VW Syncro running gear.

There is still the option of a Rover V8 as I have also had one in the Crewcab but... it would mean moving the gearbox forwards about 4 inches just to accomodate the water pump

Hmm... too many options!!

Don't get the subaru, I owned 1 for 2 years before the wife foooked off wit it, awsome power of the lin e but nowt on top end.
You'd be much better with an audi engine they put out more bhp and have better torque.

Mabey in a car that weights less 500 Kg. Its too much revs and too little torque for anything much bigger.

German diesels are the way to go, OK they don't have the out and out performance of a petrol, but they are still a more than quick enough for the public highway.

given where the engine sits I would plumb for the diesel - then u can go thru a puddle without worrying too much.
