Audi 2.5 TDi 115bhp 5 Cylinder, 195 ftlbs @2250rpm.. possible chip (done that, needs different gearing for the TDi bit). Might end up fitting this to my Syncro 16 instead.

Audi 2.2 20V 5 Cylinder Turbo, 225bhp, 258ftlbs @1950rpm (woah!) again with possible chip (Do I really need one?!) but engine is 30KG heavier than the next one...

Subaru 2.0 Turbo from Impreza/Legacy, 200-250bhp, 190-250 ftlbs depending on model, again more power from chipping etc.

All engines are wiring intensive so no difference, all will need exhaust and water systems making to suit but I already have the Audi converison parts to bolt the engines in.

Ta for now.

2.5 TDI, torquey and will shift. Chipoping it might not acheive a great deal.

2.2 NG 20V Turbo IS the engine from the late URQs. Lots of power, bombproof and if you are willing to spend, very easilly tweaked to 400BHP+ Left as it is the engine will easillay do 300,000 miles before you hit any trouble. Check which fueling system its using, should be KE Jettronic in which case, wiring it will be a complete pig, but worth it. Garett t34 turbo upgrade is worth it too if you have the time/money and bore/port to get you 2.5 or 2.8. I say this option because it will go like stink, wont be too hard on fuel if you lay off the loud pedal and with the right gearing you'll be able to tow tanks. If you need any advice on this engine the monstoer in the Audi was one of these once, plus I know a garage round here (VAG Only that would LOVE to get their hands on that to finish it off/check it over. They are stilltrying to convice me to put a 1.8T lump in the zook and an RS4 V8 in the 90.

Subaru engines dont have the reliability I'm afraid. One you do any tweaking they start to break things, normally head bolts and the infamous Subaru chocolate pistons. Tht said the TDI and 20v NG/KN engines are heavy, the Subaru engine is compact and light.

Please don't mention the RS4 again... You'll make me cry. Even more as it's talking about butchering a beautiful Audi to stick it in a ratty old Land Rover.

Another Engine choice would be the VAG 1.9TDi 150bhp, easily chippable to 190bhp and 275lb ft of Torque!

Evilgoat,
The 2.2 Turbo engine I have is from an Audi S6, so is running Bosch Motronic... very chippable  :D

dew1911,
The TDi is good offroad as it has loadsa torque from no revs at all so climbing up slopes and over rocks is made easier.

1.9 TDi is also a good idea but as with the 2.5TDi, I'd need different gearing to be able to use it on the motorway...

The Rover V8 is still an option but it'd have to be a 4.6 I think on carbs.

Dew, My AUDI 90, thy seem to think its not fast enough. Had an incident a few years agi where I picked it upafter it went in for a repair (Noisy turbo) and paid my £80, drove off, onto the motorway and planted it, cue 3rd gear wheelspin. Turned round went back and asked what they had done t her. Turned out they didnt have the turbo to hand so as an experiment I got a free upgrade and remap :)

Mickey I would got with that 2.2 S6 engine. I'm thinking about a 1.8TDi for the zook, the main reason being you can adjust just about everything to make it more 4x4 friendly.
