No drive!
Spacemud:
Ok, last night when pulling up a very slight slope out of Asda I suddenly lost all drive. Limped home by putting it in diff lock but I'll be investigating more fully later. No previous symptoms, engine goes fine, goes in to gear (in difflock). Did find that now there is about 1 inch of play in the front prop (not either of the UJ's). I'm guessing it's something in the front axle area?!! :?
Sure this problem has been discussed more than once but now I come to look I can't find it, so can anyone suggest what it probably is and what to look for? Greatful for the help as always!

Could be diff, half-shaft or both?
I had the splines strip on mine - not completely, just enough to not take the strain of driving  Unfortunately, the post no longer exists on the forum (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=9790).
I seem to remember I put it difflock and jacked up each wheel individually and tried to turn it. The rear ones did - eventually found that the splines had stripped. Replaced diff and half-shafts from a breakers.

Sounds like a CV joint has died.

likewise sounds like a cv friend had it happen to his and found one of the cv,s gone so you lose all drive as it takes the easiest route

Whilst someone else tries to drive with dif lock out take a look underneath, you will probably see one prop spinning. If so that tells you which end has the problem.
If its the rear jack one wheel and turn it, if the prop turns that side is probably ok. if not then pull that one first. you have to remove both half shafts first to get the dif out so pull them both if one is broken that's your problem. If both are OK then its the dif, so drop the rear prop and pull the dif, watch out its heavy. You will still have to pull the dif even if its a half shaft in order to get the broken bits out.
If it's the front it may also be a CV joint. To find out follow the same sequence as above. If one side does not turn the prop try again whilst someone turns the steering from lock to lock, a really crunchy feel tells you if it is a CV joint.
Have fun
Mike
