MERCo. - Information needed
« on: April 14, 2006, 20:24:06 »
There's a hive of information out there in Mud Club land, but can anybody help me with this one:

An older workmate who does not have a computer has asked me if I would see what information I could find about Manchester Executive Railway Company, also known as MERCo.

I have found very little, apart from a reference to the colours on a Pullman carriage being left in the MERCo livery.

Can anybody help me with this one, maybe even worked on the railways and can point me in the right direction to find info. on this one.

Thanks - Nigel

Funny

Believe it, or not, I can't find anything under that name either

'pj', the best I can do is suggest you contact the National Railway Museum on Leeman Road in York & talk to the archivists there.
They have the most extensive rail-related library in the country.

You may have to make an appointment though??

Whilst you're there, why not have a trip on the York Eye, the 200foot wheel that's now located in the old goods yard? (part of museum complex)

I have emailed the Railway Museum in York asking them if they have any information. Just now waiting for a reply.

To be honest I also expected BTM to reply with some info, never mind though, maybe there's someone out there who has some info.

The only info. iv'e found relates to a Pullman carriage no. 546 that is in Carnforth. It's had a few names which one being the "City of Manchester".

That'll be at the old Steam-Town site at the back of the station then.

Andy will confirm(?), that it's now the premises of West Coast Railways, a private 'Train Operating Company'

Public access is strictly prohibited, I remember it being Steam-Town & seeing one of the A4's there

West Coast Railways are based at the old Steamtown site and public access has been denied since 1997. I remember going there as a kid with mum & dad. The workshops are still in use for restorations. 6115 Scots Guardsman has recently been bought from pop mogul Pete Waterman by West Coast Railways for a lengthy restoration. Scots Guardsman was moved from The Railway Age at Crewe a couple of months ago by Allelys Heavy Haulage (got some pics somwhere but cant find them). Galatea The Jubilee is also at Steamtown undergoing restoration :D .

Sorry for rambling off the original topic
My railway guru hasnt heard of MERCo. BTW
Try emailing West Coast Railways for info

Had a Google around and came up with this is 'word doc'

http://www.semg.org.uk/coach/coupe/coupe006.doc

scroll part way down and a referance is made to MERCo livery

also look at http://www.semg.org.uk/coach/coupe/coupe029.doc there is an email address for the bloke that writes the document :D

It appears that the carriages were owned by MERCo for use on 'The Manchester Pullman' from 1966. Carriage No. 546 was built by British Rail Derby in 1966 and was/is a Pullman Parlour First Class. Tha Manchester Pullman was rebranded 'The Statesman' by MRECo

Hope that helps a little. Will do some more 'digging' tomorrow

Just had another email from railway guru :D
MERCo was the original name for Northern Belle based at Manchester Victoria - the offices used to be on the main concourse opposite the gents bogs. The railway guru will dig out some more bumph from his files and let me know

As is often said on here 'I'll get me coat' or should that be 'anorak'

I knew that the people out there in MudClub land wouldn't let me down. There had to be somebody who had heard of MERCo or at least had a contact that had.

There's so many people out there with so many interests, hobbies and pastimes that can be so different to our interest here on the MudClub that if a question is asked, it very rarely goes unanswered.

Many thanks for the information so far - keep it coming.

Andy the Landy - Raining in West Yorkshire at the moment so "anoraks" are definately needed.

Thanks - Nigel

In that case, perhaps you ought to start a thread for members to notify us of their specialist topics, just for referance? :?

And by a stroke of luck, the railway guru has 2 copies of the leaflet. Once I receive the hardcopy by snail mail I'll scan the rest of it or post it to you

BTM - cagoules and anoraks, I've got quite a collection
