Accelerator pump?
« on: April 14, 2006, 19:41:55 »
Hi all, can anyone tell me what the accelerator pump's purpose in life is, and what it should do when the accelerator is pressed?
Currently when I press the accelerator, the accelerator pump rod moves but the lever that goes into the pump doesn't. This, I say to the jury, is a fault.

Almost forget to say that it's a Solex carb from a 1955 Series 1, 2ltr.

Cheers...

I believe this part of the carb squrts fuel into the inlet and thus the engine . Does it not work cos if its not broke don't fix it . How does the engine run ?

The accelorator pump is supposed to slightly richen the mixture at the moment you floor it, supposidly to give better response to your request on the peddle.

The chances are the daphram on it has split thus no squirt.

IF the overhall kit is still avalable then it would be worth fixing it, if not stick a webber on (only if not to worried about originality under bonnet).

Thanks for your help.  I've also heard that fitting a Rover 60 head with a SU improves things as well!

If you have a few spare pounds you could go for a stage 2 head and SU HS6 carb(1.75"), very well worth looking at but a s**t to set up (ended up taking mine to the mot centre and geting them to stick the probe for the emmisions up the exhaust whilst i tuned the carb).
