wheel nuts

(1/4) > >>

woody:
a tyre on the front looked slightly soft when i parked up last night
so this morning nipped into the local petrol station to use the air line
just blowing the tyre up and noticed one of my wheel nuts loose with a 1/4 inch gap between the nut and the wheel
luckily i had my tyre bar in the boot a quick check revealed all the wheel nuts loose on that wheel all others OK

now i should know better

will go home tonight and give myself a good slapping

Paul:
Your very lucky...

I know someone who lost his front wheel and it took the wing off.

Check them all to be on the safe side.

woody:
will check with a bar tonight
QUESTION do the chrome covers come off to tighten the nuts or do they stay on

Paul:
They are part on the nut... they don't come off.

hobbit:
Something you can do is mark the nuts relative to their position on the wheel, a bit of marker pen (ie a dot on the nut and another on the wheel)

Other things are marker arrows thay slot over the nuts and you set them pointing to each other, used a lot on commercial vehicles

But the old and tried method, (which I admit I dont do as regualr as I should) is regular checks on the nuts themselves

You can as a quick test is to tap the nuts with a small hammer or suitable spanner and listen to the sound, try cracking one nut off and listen to the difference
