Well, after a few weeks of playing up, I think that the ignition barrel has finally given up the ghost.

I've sprayed it with silicon spray and WD40 (as a last resort) but the key will simply not turn.  Not sure if summat has broke in there, or if it's just gummed up with dirt etc.

Trouble now is what the hell do I do with it?  Steering lock is on, so can't get it down the drive onto a recovery truck, so it looks like it'll be a home repair.

How difficult is it to change a ignition barrel, and how much is a new one gonna cost?  I'm not even gonna begin to think about how long it will take LR to get hold of one  :(

my grandad had this problem with his 200tdi discovery, was the internal gubbings of the barrel shot, im sure it cost him 15 pound for a new barrel and steering lock from a land rover breaker, from worcester cant remember his name now though but look in the back of landrover mags for breakers, as for hor hard wast very a hour and he was driving around happy as larry

Never done it on a Disco, but on other cars you can pop the barrel out quite easily - strip the cowling off, put the key in, and there should be a small pin that you push in to release the barrel, if no pin, then there will be a small hole, use a very small screwdriver and again, the barrel should pop out.

The new barrel should then slot straight in - Peugeot can even build a barrel to match the original key if you provide them with the key number (not sure that LR could do this !)

Use a LITTLE bit of oil (eg 3in1 or ATF), don't fill the barrel. Dip the key in the oil as well, then, put the key in and out loads of times to get the oil around the barrel. Wiggle the key whilst turning it, should get it working.  :wink:

i have noticed that my barrel has been a little sticky lately, is it worth worring about as i will be doing a 500 mile trip in france next month,

Yep. tried all that, and unfortunately with no joy  :(

Have ordered a new barrel this morning which will take up to 14 days to arrive  :shock:

Are you stuck without your car?

Your dealer should be able to get it quicker than that - they should be able to VOR (vehicle off road) order parts for the next day, but will be reluctant to as they will lose margin on it.  Most will only VOR stuff for their own use.

If you do a lot of business with them or get your car regularly serviced with them then it might be worth a word.  Or get them to do it and see whether they can do it faster.

I had to replace the whole lock assembly on my j reg disco last year, it cost £30 quid for a new unit with keys off e-bay, took about an hour and a half to change as I had to cut the old one off with a reciprocating saw. dunno how different the later ones are though.

H, they can get it faster, but as I want a new barrel to match my existing key it's a special order.  A VOR'd one would mean a new ignition key as well.
I get on very well with the stores manager at H@rtwell, and I know he will do all he can to get it sorted and will discount it as well  :wink:

Mine started playing up this morning so after reading this i've being to the local dealer and he's said ''2 days to get one and £115 + VAT please'',on yer bike i said. I went 4 miles up the road to an independant dealer asked for the same part using the part number and guess what-got it on the shelf and then he says ''£42 + VAT''. Who's taking the micky now!. Needless to say it's bought and fitted

just done mine,£60.00 from independant dealer in Leeds,takes about half a hour,its best to cut the old one off as its near impossible to get the shear bolts out,MAKE SURE YOU GET NEW SHEAR BOLTS WITH THE NEW ONE,you wont be able to use the original key as a new one is supplied with the new lock etc..........good luck

Um, that's why it's gonna take two weeks to get hold of a new one, as I'm having a barrel cut to match my current key  :wink:

mine was getting sticky and I looked at the key and found it was twisted. put the spare key in. no probs. jobs a gooden

You'll need the ignition barrel as thats the bit that's worn. (I think they come with the steering lock don't they)?

The switch i imagine is just the little metel box on the back of the barrel that has the contacts in for the electrics. And to take the barrel out take off the switch box one the back of the barrel (one screw) you will see a metel bar sticking out look for another small screw on the outside of the barrel undo this then push the metel bar forward as you wiggle the key in the ignition this should slide out the whole barrel and drop the steering lock back down. And then if you look at the switch pack you will see a plastic insert turn that and the car will start up :wink:

Well, called the local dealer today and was told new barrel is in.  So off I toddles down to Hartwell with keys in hand (just to make sure the thing works).  Just as well I did as old keys would not turn new barrel.
We recheck chassis number and key code, which match.  A bit of further digging shows up a complete lock change in 2000 by another dealer, before the car was mine, who had not updated the key code to the new one on the central database.
Two choices:
1) Go back to original dealer and try and find new key code
2) Another full lockset change with new keys

Luckily one of the technicians 'found' a couple of blank TD5 key blades (which you cannot order seperately) which has meant that I have fitted the new barrel and had the keys cut to the new code.  Only trouble is that the door lock is now on a different code, but we can worry about that in the future.
Other worry is that the new barrel is quite tight and won't always spring back from position III (starter motor on).  I'm hoping it will sort itself out as I begin to use it again.
But other than that, I'm back on the road again, for the time being.

my lock barrel has finally gone now, we went down the tip to through bits away and then there i was stuck at the tip with all the windows down and no way of starting the car, after 1 hour of trying we finally managed to turn the key in  the barrel

so ive ordered the new barrel are the difficult to fit

also is it alright to cou the old one off with an angle grinder

Erm, I didn't even entertain trying that as the grinder would have made a complete mess of the dash  :wink:

The bolts that hold the barrel on were easy to shift with an old chisel and a hammer (simply bash the bolts anti-clockwise with the chisel), no cutting required.  After that a really easy job, no more than 30 mins all in.
