Puffing blue smoke
Mace:
Symptoms...300tdi
2nd/3rd gear Low Ratio, on an incline, power on, blue tinge to exhaust gases. Comes and goes.
One occassion only, long decent with little throttle, blue cloud of smoke only when I pulled away. Stopped instantly, no more smoke.
Doesn't do it any other time. Any gear any ratio, 20 or 70 mph, uphill or down hill. Full loaded or empty. Doesn't do it when cold, doesn't do it when left to idle for 5 mins, doesn't do it at start up, doesn't do it if left to stand. Emmissions are dam good according to MOT man.
Oil is obviously getting into the inlet, but where from and why only at certain times ? Any info gratefully received :-)

mine puffs out a bit of blue smoke when on steep incines or steep decents its just oil getting places it shouldnt when the engine is tipped at an angle its not supposed to be at
my advice would be to forget about it

davidlandy:
whip the top intercooler hose off and have a peek in there see if there is any gunge - if so clean it out
do you have an egr valve ?
Mace:
Sorry Dave forgot to mention that. Yep EGR blanked off ages ago. Gunk cleaned out too along with the intercooler around 2000 miles ago. Twaz spotless when I put it back together. Checked it all the other day and there's the usual traces of oil in the pipe that leads to the inlet but nothing bad.
davidlandy:
a little oil in there is quite normal
I wonder if its a worn valve guide seal or two - the incline could make it appear under certain circumstances
hmmmm
