The spider unit was an extra piece of security to keep Thatcham happy as far
as I am aware. The replacement jumper still leaves the vehicle secure and immobilised just not as heavily and much more reliable. The problem is caused as mentioned earlier by a dry joint within the unit. This is most a likely result of its position near the radio, heater etc. If you fit the jumper in theory you never have to take the dash apart again.
