:(  Sorry to hear it went for the worse!  At least you know for sure - no guess work now.  Just the inevitable time and money!

Maybe a LR diesel, but you should try some of the new diesels we have over here - Navistar's 6.0L (in the Ford F-250 thru F-650 range among others) is a definate 'challenge'.  Of course, having said that, I still love a good diesel!

What a bummer ....    Sorry to hear bad news. I have just rebuilt mine with new heads after suffering exactly the same syptoms but my head gaskets were ok. Not sure it has cured the misfire when hot yet tho. Will know better when i have had a chance to run it for a while. Just having the sills replaced now for mot.
Hope you manage to sort it out without too much expense.

had night mere with this engine, got heads back fitted one and on last bolt it snaped yes it took 5 hours to remove broken bolt in block , made home made jig and drilled then retapped ,great heads on away we go. no would not run , would start then die ,same on gas but get back fire, took me another day too sort it was oil pump  had not set it to line up with number one,and was one touth out so could not adjust timing to correct tdc setting . running like a dream so will go out in morning to try her out.  :D
