Bad news

Bad news the local land rover  garage has just been in touch about the series and the news is the chassis has gone to far for the mot. they want £2200 for a new chassis and to fit Ha Ha in there dreams. So do i get someone who knows what they are doing to weld it for now, Do i get a new chassis and make a start :shock: . or do i strip it and sell the bits.
 Realy it only needs 12 months on the road so my dad can get to work till he retire.

get a fully galvanised one for less than a grand, couple of weekends and you have a series landy again, that will last a fair few years

depends how bad the rot is,

my chassis was condemmed by an MOT man,
3 small patches, and the same guy then passed it

you should be able to get a list of the work needed, what can seem a lot on an ordinary vehicle is not so on a landy, you can access the chassis a lot easier

I know what you are saying. this is a land rover place and the drivers side rail does look in a bad way. But as for welding it i dont know if it can be done.

it can always be done, it just depends how much time youve got. i have found that mot garages cant be ar**d to do the welding half the time.
cut out all the rot and patch it up, jobs a good'un :D  :D  :D

If you have somewhere to do it, go for it, it would be good to see another restored instead of scrapped or stripped

Would love to restore it. It's cost and weather as i have no garage to work in so i might sorn it off the road for summer and do it in the sun . Will have to give it some thought.
 What am i likely to come up against other than a new chassis.

The next main piece that is a pain is the bulkhead,  until you start stripping, you dont know, a partial strip may be in order to see what stays in the right pieces, then you can decide what to do, if you find it will need too much, you can finish off the strip and sell the good bits

Dave, I see the plot thickens. OK I'll try to be brief, the 90 I bought around the same time, suffered the same problem but 11 months on. At it's 1st MOT in my ownership. I went nuts !!! I kept it SORN for 3 months whilst I debated whether to repair of break her. A good friend of mine eventually managed to weld up the two major points on the chassis by making L shaped sections to go around the chassis rail to re-form the box section. The hardest point was finding enough solid metal to weld to. We went way beyond the area that needed repair.

Anyway, 15 months on from that day, she's still on the road, still has a valid MOT and all was not lost. I wouldn't recommend paying a them or any other garage to either repair or re-chassis the Series. Find yourself a nice chap who loves welding and is willing to spend the time and effort on getting it right. I'm sure one will turn up on this forum if you ask nicely :-)

I wonder if you bought the Series vehicle I looked at at the time but was swayed by this nice rebuilt shiny blue 90....yeah right. No, don't get me started, my list of complaints was HUGE !!!!

Plate it, we are in the middle of repairing a 90 with knackered chassi, make sure you cut all the rot out first, you may need to take off a lot more metal than you would expect but makes life easier, use cornflakes packets to make templates

I repaired my footwells in situ. It was not easy but it can be done. This saves having to take all the elctrics pipes ect ect. If you are thinking about doing the chasi and welding it up there is another trick for you. You can take the rear floor pan out to get at the top of the chassi which most ppl dont do so its usualy rotten on top. Drill out all the rivets and out it comes. It makes life alot easyer.

I like the old leafsprung madness. i have got the disco as well so i would like to keep the leafs.
 Kev it the electrics and bulk head that are the scary bits to me.

dont worry about the electrics i can do them for you as i have my c&g in auto electrics and Have rewired most of my rr all it will cost you is coffee and biscuits. So you just need someone to do the welding now

it was not that clean about 20 mins before. have a look at my pics  and yea could go for some laning. And nice to meet you plus did you notice when we parked up the only two cars that struggled to get pass were both woman drivers :lol:

Dave, you'll have to give us a shout when you are doing it, if i'm not busy i'll give you a hand!! Can also get hold of a mig welder if Chris is in a good mood. Best thing to do is have a pre m.o.t or we can just have a hammer around and see what falls off  :lol:  :lol:  :lol: ...

Is it the front to rear chassis you mean, and the bits near the spring mounts or is there more????

If your stuck for space we could maybe do it round my house by the garage?

Thank Neil and everyone who has offered help make me very proud to be a member of this fantastic club
 I have stripped some bits of it to have a better look had a mate have a look and it looks like we should be able to weld it to get another 12 months out of it.
 I will try to get some pics and let you now how we get on.

i bought my old disco a while back. she was in a bad way. the bloke i bought it from had put her in for an mot and it failed on lots of welding. he got a qoute from them and it was over £2500 worth  :shock: . so i bought her off him and spent about 2 weeks bashing away to see what fell off or where the hammer would go through next. it was quite disheartning to be honest.
i spent the best part of 2 months welding her up, plating and replacing pannels , oh and teaching myself to weld in the prosses  :oops: . all this was done in my dads front garden as i dont have anywhere to do it here. well she flew through her mot so all the hard work was worth it. i think all in all it cost me the grand total of about £300 for new pannels and material. keep at her mate and good luck........
