cracked piston ring?
jimthelandyman:
just found out from the garage that i have low compression in cylinder 1, the plugs had been taken out and there was oil in there. This has also caused oil to be dumped into the air filter, the airbox is very full of oil, do i have a cracked piston ring or is it something else?
rollazuki:
could be cracked piston or piston ring, could just be oil control ring gummed up and stuck in the piston, or the oil drain holes behind the control ring gummed up and blocked.
jimthelandyman:
Does anyone know how long this job would take for a garage to do, to take the top end off and replace the broken parts? ive been running around in the 90 for about a month but i have not heard any tappety noises that could be a sign of a cracked piston or ring.
hobbit:
Not too sure on the defender, but its poss to pull the head and sump off to do the work on the series.
Did they pop some oil in the cylinder and retest to confirm an upper or lower loss of compression?
jimthelandyman:
not sure what they did but they said there was oil in there already, must be a ring. Its been burning loads of oil and it has sucked oil into the air filter through the engine breather i think.
