420 miles in a day in s3 swb diesel!!
« on: March 05, 2006, 15:42:26 »
OK so i went to collect the 90 yesterday.. set out at 6:30 am, returned home at midnight  :? .. over 400 miles all in a 1972 swb diesel, and 1/2 of it was towing a 90 on a dolly, do i ache - YES
am i Deaf - YES
Do I now love the S3 more than before - Y E S
never missed a beat, even when towing up hill in 3rd thinking about 2nd (on the M6 BTW!! )
No servo, so braking down keele bank was... erm Interesting!
few hiccups along the way, all non Land rover related.
around £80 of diesel slung in the tank along the way, discovered a few new noises, and found a few more oil leaks...

best part about it?? all 3 of my passengers (wife and 2 kids) all asleep on the way back - even though they had complained about the noise on the way up ;)

So brings me to part 2 of this.. whats the most youve done in your series in one day??

Well at least you got it done, good fun eh

Recently not a lot, but when I drove them for a living, more than likely similar mileage, North Yorkshire to Wiltshire and back, one driver that was fun, did it a few times as well, filling from jerry cans too

I did stoke to Poole once (and back again the next week) in a SWB diesel 2A. About 240miles I reckon. We were in convoy with a petrol 2A and averaged about 45mph most of the way

My diesel was very full of rucksacks and camping kit for about 10 people along with a passenger. I had a full roofrack and the back full of stuff to the roof.

Went fairly well until we got stuck in some traffic in a town somewhere and i started overheating and then my header tank cracked and started leaking (it was squirting all over like a waterpistol). After stopping in a bus stop and getting some water from a very nice lady in a nearby flat we had to go to halfords where we bought some fibreglass and encased my header tank :)
Still havent replaced it yet 5 years later but i rebuilt the engine and it now runs a lot coooler!

Not as far as yours granted :) but a little more worring.

Bought my first landy just before xmas, a Series III 88" Diesel. Got a lift to Deal near Dover from my home in Blandford Dorset to take a look at it.

It's 200 miles or 3 1/2 hours according to multimap.com, but took closer to 4 1/2 to get there what with the M25 at tea time etc.

Anyway arrived in the dark took it for a test drive wasn't totally impressed, bulb went in our only torch whilst checking her over etc. Decided not to buy as the guy wouldn't budge on the price and we wern't to sure about the condition.

About 5 mins after driving away had a phone call on my mobile, seller agreed to meet half way on price, so I bought the heap :)

Left Deal at about 10:30hrs got back to Blandford at 5. Really chuffed she'd made it all the way under her own steam (litrally) with nearly all the lights we had set off with.

Still working on her now though, chassis' been rebuilt/welded, second hand bulkhead is now fitted, dash is in, just the body work and a head gasket to go :)

Next time I'll take a spare torch.

I'm actually very pleased with my purchase, she made it home, that was good enough for me. An edge of the seat drive though esecailly seing as I had to hold her in 4th all the way as it kept juming out.

 yeah dont you just love series motors?
any other motor would have died on the way back.
.did have my doubts about doing that much in 1 day in a series - especially as im off work with sciatica   , but the seating position actually helped a bit.
still been there and done it now, so just need time to sort the 90 out and prepare the series for its turbo rebuild ;)

just waiting to rip the 2.5 td out of the 90 and refit in the series..along with an overdrive - should improve mpg and my eardrums...trying to find out what they line the 90's bulkhead with as its a damn site quieter than the series

I once did Nottingham to brigton and back in a series III 88 Diesel ragtop - set off at 1am, got there at about 8, I had a 1/2 hour nap in the services on the way down. I came back only a couple of days leter too. In the one ton, I did Leeds - Gloucestershire over two days, with a break at the girlfriends in brum. Im gonna have to drive it all the way back straight up though...

Boldy going where no one-ton has gone before...

MAD?... erm OK i'll have to agree on that!
but how many other 34 year old vehicles could cope with that? especially towing another on the way back, all with 4 people in as well...makes you proud to own a Landy.....*sniff*

I drove mine from Cornwall to Reading.
I have a 2.5D so she happily did 70 all the way home.
Took a little over 4 hours and cos me only slightly more in fuel than for my girlfriend (who drove us down there to collect the Landy) in her 1.9td Peugeot 306

i did 140 miles last wednesday, and i gotta say that it was a little too far for me
i was feeling the pain til friday.
still, means i get over 28 miles to the gallon, as i only put £25 of diesel in before, and had enough to last til today left over
