power steering box leaking

(1/3) > >>

oakeedokee:
The PAS box on my rangie classic is leaking from the sector shaft seal causing the steering to stiffen up erratically. Anyone know how big a job this is to replace the seal? Reading the manual would suggest a total strip down followed by a complicated re-build. Or am I better off fitting a secondhand box complete? What other bits am I likely to need if I remove and re-fit the box?

Paul:
Have you checked the U/J's on the steering shaft between the box and the steering wheel,
if they are not cleaned and oiled that can also make the steering stiff..

Fit a scondhand one, loads quicker and you should get one for £30,although try and get one with a good drop arm attached.

If your going to remove the drop arm from the steerring box yourself, then you will probably need some heat. warm up the drop arm where its splined onto the streering box makes it a lot lot lot easier to remove.

An oxy-acetaline toruch works a treat, but I expect a blow tourch (butain etc.) would also work.

If you do decide to rebuild it just found this on ebay, may be of some use to you
