hi all. just had a fantastic afternoon at frickley 4x4.loads of mud etc... one small problem i managed to destroy my viscuss fan well not the mount but removed all the blades some how. now the engine seems free which is good but as i have a full width intercooler i could do with fitting a fan or fans. what do i need apart from a the fans. just want them on a switch so during normal road use can use them in traffic but turn them off when playing in deep water

Hi Mate, I fitted an electric fan to my disco a while back, you will need the following....

1: Good quality wire (I used red and black)
2: A 4 post relay
3: A GOOD quality switch rated to around 25 amps (the fan will pull around 18 amps) so anything less will probably melt.
4: Some crimps to attach the wires to the battery.

It is very straight forward to do and putting it on a relay is the best way to do it, you can also include an inline fuse, all this will cost around Ã‚Â£20 so it is cheap to do. Good Luck and hope this helps.

Hi Fish, fuel economy did not come into it for me as I just wanted to keep it cool when off roading....I used a pair of Rover 800 series fans on it, I now have Kenlowes fitted to my current Disco.

i still have a kenlowe kit sat here next to me waiting to be fitted to my disco. cant wait to feel the difference. but i just aint had the time to fit it :roll:

ade < i can give you a hand if you want. Dead easy. You dont need a big switch any will do. You need a fairly hefty relay or it will get red hot.Mine blows a 30 amp fuse when you switch them on!!!!!!
Vectra v6 fans are the best i have found. Cheap and fit very well. Pull loads of air through.

If you are using just fans Wizard does a stat switch which I fitted into the hybrid on a 300 tdi, its adjustable as well

hi bully thats one cool disco mate. my mate is send me pics i was in a blue disco with external cage he was driving a 2 dr tonka toy range rover. thanks for the offer but not sure when i'm back in sheffield for the next few weeks. vectra v6 eh, good theres a vaxhall salvage place near my work so i'll pop along to them. i guess they suck rather than blow

yeah they suck , and if the 200 tdi 's rad is anything like the v8's it is the perfect height and width.

Hi Ade, I would still go with a 25 amp switch to be safe, I used a cheap plastic one and it kept burning out and failing, if you guna do the job you may aswell do it right firtst time, and what buly says is true, the relay will get warm but be ok, like I said use good wire, around 4mm going to the battery.

P.S..Reason I used Rover 800 fans was because they are dirt cheap and move lots of air, I mounted them in front to blow air into the rad.

just spied on ebay some p38 air con fans anyone know if these will do before i bid on them

They will work , but are not designed for what you want. I paid about 12 quid for my vectra ones..so not bad. Discotel you should have no where near that ampage at your switch. If you have wired ti correctly and used a switched live as the trigger it will only pull a couple of amps, exactly the same as spotlights . The entire idea of a relay if that it isolates the switch from the power circuit.
27 amp wire from halfords is fine as long as you wire the fans separately to the relay and dont just join them together.

I,ve used the original aircon fans on my V8 as i binned the aircon (didnt work) they work ok but as bulli said they dont really move quite as much air as i would like, i feel they could be better for cooling so when funds allow i will be changing them for some better ones hopefully.
its worth investing in a temp switch it saves you having to keep watching the temp gauge to manually swith the fans on as well, something else i havent got round to doing yet :roll:

I have a pair of Kenlowes, each wired to it's own 30amp fused relay and these melted last January, laning with Dom.

Don't skimp on the heavy side, I use one run of 27Amp to each fan as already suggested, get quality relays of 30 or 40 amps, remember they get hot in use so put them in an open area. If you have wired it up correctly the switch should be carrying milliamps, if it's burning out something is wrong. Another reason for the relay is to keep the heavy wiring as short as possible, saving money, weight and resistance in that wire.

As a final note, you may not care about economy, but the 5hp the fan consumes comes from your engine, if you don't want the economy you probably want the power, you're paying for it

The switch is wired in right and there is not 25amps going through it, I just used a good switch to make sure it did not melt, the relay is fine that I used aswell, I did melt a crappy switch though.

i got quoted Ã‚Â£20 for a pair of twin fans from a sierra 2.9 4x4 tested with months guarantee. can u get them any cheaper?
