It wont start!
« on: February 04, 2006, 19:32:06 »
My '88 rrc wont start! I have spark but the fuel pump was'nt  working so have traced  the fault right back to the fuse so far,no power to the fuse, havent traced it any further yet but i bypassed the fuse and put a live to the battery so i have fuel, I have changed everything I can possible think of to do with the engine running, relays ecu airflow meter, ignition switch, cold start sensor etc, but al to availe, still wont start and still no power to the fuse. While im turning it over sometimes it will fire and at one point even manage to get it to sound as if it was going to run but as soon as i let go of the key nothing.Im going to try and trace power fault right back to the source but in the meantime can Anyone shed any light on the problem?

Please help

P.S. I threatened it with the hammer,I offered it nice new shiney bits, Ive even threatened to burn it and none of that worked either

The pump won't fire in EFI (I think) if the spark is not good enough. Check the voltage across the pump fuse. Secondly, check the ignition amp. If you have fuel, air and spark the only other thing I can think of is timing way way out, bad rotor, knackered dizzy cap, dodgy coil lead...the list goes on ;-)

I dont have any power at the fuse at all, checked/replaced all the rest, am at the moment thinking that what ever is causing no power to the fuse is causing it not to start :?

Ignition amp, is that the box attached under the airflow meter? if so I've change that as well

cheers

I think your ECU is screwed, the pump should run for a second when you turn on the ignition to pressurise the system, you can hear it running if all is quiet around you.

Try squirting some easy start down the plenum chamber, if it coughs at all then chances are there is no fuel.

have you checked the pressure regulating valve, it may be allowing the fuel straight back to the tank, if you have the flapper type airflow meter remove the filter and with the ignition on press the flap in and the fuel pump should run, you should be able to hear the pump noise change as the pressure builds, and you can just about hear the fuel returning through the valve once the pressure is reached.

Mine would'nt start, similar problems, there was a loose earth lead on the engine which stopped the relayfrom working.

I think there are two earth connections on right cylinder bank (looking from front)

I'm not sure where it is as my local garage got it going (I gave up after hours of frustration-and had to go to work!).

I beleive there is a relay activated by the coil  Its close to the coil on mine-on left side of engine- as well as the relay under the seat.

Could be, mine started not long after I had a head gasket done, they said one earth bolt was loose and rounded off, so they put in a new one. Hope you find it :x
