Having rebuilt the brakes I come to put the drum back on. Put in the new brake drum screw and it doesn't fit!! Goes in the hole but won't screw into the hub. as this is the only screw listed in the parts book, anyone got any thoughts on why it doesn't fit??

Alternatively how do you convert to discs at the back?

Dave,

I was wondering if the wheel would hold it on OK. I'll try it although a bloke from Nottingham has offered me a 24 spline diff and disc brakes for £150. Needs discs and pads. Good deal or not do you think? Might pop over to the LRM thing at Gaydon on Monday and see what people have.

Will be up and running soon. Have to keep stopping for rain!!

Just sent him an e-mail so we'll see what it's like :D . Not too far to Nottingham :) . Just hope I can get it in the back of the Honda :?  :? !

Got Tixover on tomorrow :D  :D  :D  then off to Gaydon :D  (you going :?: ) so it'll be next weekend before I can go and have a look :(  :( .

Fit discs to the rear!

Find an early range rover rear axle and fit that as a replacement for the other axle.

The only mods you'll need to make are new brake pipes (unless you're lucky, but for a few quid it's worth doing anyway) and the offside upper shock absorber mount needs to be moved. The RR has one shock forward (on the nearside) and one shock rearward (offside) - so you need to remove the 3 bolts that hold the existing shock mount on, drill 3 new holes, and stick it there.

somewhere I have pics of mine in various states.  Including new pistons and pads and s/h axle, I think the whole conversion only cost me about £90, and now I can brake in an almost straight line! I can stop on hills when pointing uphill and all those fancy tricks!

Thanks :D . I want to fit a Defender one as I can't be bothered with moving mountings about :(  :( . On my truck it either bolts on or it doesn't go on :cry:  :cry: .

Just tried Dave's idea of using the wheel to hold the drum on :) . It certainly works! :D  :D . So well that once the wheel nuts are tight you can't move the wheel :x  :?  :?  :x .

All this trouble for one tiny screw that you can't buy :evil:  :evil: .

I got my brake screw from Craddocks and it's way too large. Might try Paddocks's version. It could be a diffrent size.

Better off ringing first, with the measurement of the one you want and the one that is wrong, dunno much about defenders but wondering if the series screws are the same or not, have a word with them see what they say before getting one
