Whats that "CLUNK"??
« on: January 31, 2006, 17:38:58 »
Help please guys/gals.
Just got my 90 back from the garage, looks the biz. But noticed on the way home when changing gear a clunk comes from underneath towards the rear as the clutch is disengaged. Even changing from 3rd to 4th theres this clunk as gearing engages. Its had new rear prop and 2" lift, can anyone advise on this please.
Cheers.

go underneath with a wheel choked & outa gear see if there is any play in any UJ's & also see how far you can move the hndbrake drum in relation to the front prop, might need to jack a wheel up to do that, also

does your 90 have drum rear brakes?

if so pop the dust cap of the end & get some1 to move the motor in gear with the brakes on & see how much play is in the splines in the 1/2 shaft

Could also be the rear A-frame ball joint...

When worn, will give a clonk as drive is taken up.

See pic - item no 12

Got a similar problem on lad's 110, (1995 300Tdi)

Just replaced rear half shafts and drive flanges which has improved it a lot, but clunk is still there.  When you move the vehicle backwards and forwards a bit and watch watch the propshaft / rear diff flange it takes up drive, then spins a little .......  and "clunk"  then carries on OK?

Am thinking wear in rear diff .............  anyone any ideas

Bear in mind it's done 190k miles

Dave
WIP ........ just Keeps Changing .......

Just been to the garage, the bill for work carried out on my 90 was waiting for me, big shock, £801 over what i was expecting.
Anyway back to the CLUNK.....
They checked it over and suggested everything is perfect, apparently it is the new springs moving/turning when i bounce out of a pot hole. The clunk during acceleration was no where to be heard this morning, only when i hit a bump a little hard & then its as i leave the bump not when i hit it.
Anyone got any recommendations on how to secure the top of the springs to prevent them dropping during offroading???
Ive heard there are some sort of bracket you can buy, but i may have misheard the conversation. (still getting to grips with scottish accent). Or should i just get somee dislocation cones?
