Oil leak from diff

(1/5) > >>

Brother Ted:
Hello all,

My disco is leaking oil from the front of the diff. The metal on the front has worn so thin that the oil just seaps through it. (See pic)

I'm wondering what the best way to sort this out is, and how difficult/easy it will be.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!   :D

Thanks,

Brother Ted.

Brother Ted:
Just another question, whilst I'm here:

If i take the axle off, can the diff pan be changed without removing the diff?

Thanks!

Brother Ted.

chuggaman:
afaik  you cut off the old diff pan and weld on a new one.
you should take the diff out as when you grind the pan off metal filings will contaminate the axle casing

Yep, that about the size of it........

My rear diff pan has rotted through at the bottom. Its sealed up with 'Chemical Metal' at the minute. Lasted 12 months so far

Brother Ted:
ah so we need to remove the front axle?

Is this a big job? never attempted it before.
