Cold Start Light Questions

:)  got some good and bad news about the series  8)  bad news is its so cold she dont wanna start lol (used to that with the disco)

but the good news is the dash lights are working now woo hoooooo

but can anyone tell me about the cold start light im guessing that as its not on when u turn the ignition, and comes on slowly when u hold the key inbetween starting and accessorys its the same idea as the coil light in my disco so when its fully lit i can turn her over?

Hi Keith,

Hold it in the warm up position (Heater plug light on) for about 10 - 15 seconds and then turn it over.

Do you get the cold start on Petrols? I thought you only got it on diesels for the glow plugs.  :?

hmmm now i know the engine is warm now cos i just set fire to a set of jumpleads trying to jump start the old gal hmmm patiance is running a littlleeeee thin now  :evil:

tried jump leads from disco NOPE
charged battery over nite   NOPE
Flattened battery again almost turning over
tried jump leads again "loud phzzzzzzz noise and some nice flashes later" NOPE

ps santa plz buy me some jump leads now ive frazzled mine

starting to put the haynes manual away and lean towards a friendly garage person grrrrrrrrrr lol

to me it sounds like theres no diesel getting into the cylinders.
things to check:

does she smoke at all as your turn her over?
is the stop stuck in the stop position?
crack one of the injector pipes open and see if fuel comes out as you turn it over.

1st thing I would check is does it have Series wired Glow plugs? if it has 1 bad glow plug none of them will work. Without properly functioning glow plugs it is unlikely to start, so check those first particularly if you have had it running previously.

thanks i will nip into the garage later to look at the plugs as like u said it was running fine...

and answers to other question is no no smoke when trying to turn over
and by stop do u mean then engine kill ?  if so thats fully pushed home .
ill try the injectors as a last means


 im going into town now anyways to get a new thermostat for the disco so ill get some extra bits and bobs while im there

Could be the diesel thats gone waxy from the freezing temperatures, especially if its been stood a while, don't think the 2.25 diesels like starting in the cold at all.

You could try using a hair dryer set to hot to blow air into the air inlet to get warm air in.

A last resort is an item called Bradex cold start, squirt directly into the inlet, not through the filter

It will force it to start, but not recommended to be used on an regular basis, definately a last resort

If you can I would suggest a tow start if possible

lol id need a longggggggggggggggggg extension lead to get the hairdryer to work in the garage then .

lol  :lol:  its a bit far thanks for ya help though as it stillllll wont start :(

gona test the glow plugs next b4 i buy new ones.

typical as i had it running lovely and i was planning on taking it in for mot this month

i have tried tow starting but no good first time she almost turned but then stalled str8 away after that couldnt get it to do anything but lock rear wheels  :oops:

The reason I said hair dryer is that a blow torch uses oxygen in combustion, this stops the oxygen getting to the engine..
Shame about the extension lead and the tow start.  When I'm having problems I always park on a steep hill, still use the glow plugs, roll and in just enough time bump in 3rd or 4th.

Was going to say the same with towing, 2nd or 3rd pop the clutch when up speed, also try dropping it in 4wd as well

gona give it one more go at the tow start then tried 3rd an popping clutch as i say it started to fire but stalled quickly and after that she wouldnt do anything...  

i didnt think i could tow it in 4 wheel drive ? but im game to try anything to get it too start cos i need a mot for billing  :twisted:

I have had alot of problems with starting my 2.25D and I am an ace at it now. If one heater plug is not working the light on the dash will not work or any of the other heater plugs so I would say your heater plugs are fine. If you wish to check after a heat up of the plugs go out under the bonnet and get hold of the top of one. I burnt my finger after trying a few times. Also Diesel these days has to be sub zero to wax so you can rule that out aswell.

Go to the fuel pump and give it a few manual pumps by hand. You will find under it there is a leaver to do this.

On the side of your CAV Distributor injector pump you will see two blead screws. One is on the sqare box which houses the throttel and the other is on the body of the pump about 2 inch away. Pump the fuel pump 2 or 3 times then open the bleed screw which is on the round body of the injector pump. If fuel comes out then close the screw. If not pump the fuel pump whilst its open this will fill the injector pump with fuel when it starts to come out lock the screw. Now do the same with the other bleed screw on the throttel body SQUARE box on the side of the pump. Now if you got air out that has been your problem I promis you it will start. This will only take you 5 mins to do. If you need a Picture of the pump to locate the bleed screws just ask. My landrover is a 1975 and it never fails to start in the morning and its been cold up here. If you have air in the cav injector pump of a landy it will not clear it as its compressed in the top of the pump and then forced down the tubes to the injectors which is then forced through the injectors. If there is air there it will not go anywhere as it just compresses and not enough to go passed the injectors.

If you undestand that you are better than me....lol
Give it a try. I was towed 3 miles to bleed my pump and it still did not. Then I found this info out and it started off the key.....

so you said the kill switch was fully home, is it doing anything in the engine bay? if that is jamming, you wont be getting a fuel through. this has happened to me more than once.

EZ start has been mentioned, but dont use it excessively because it washes the oil off the cylinder bores. which is bad.

You can get cold-start for Petrols.  Not sure which carbs can do it, but basically, some carbs can warm themselves up prior to starting just like glow plugs heat themselves.

It's intended for the really cold climates though.  So it might of only been available to the MOD, could still be wrong...

:evil:  tried the fuel pump option that seems fine fuel comes str8 out soon as bleed nipples open

cant get the tops of the glow plugs how do u do it ? they look to me like a twist on cap thats threaded and then just lift of wires underneath ? am i right as i cant budge the little so and so`s

and now just to top things off it wont do anything on the key... doesn`t turn over doesn`t click

really really annoying now......
