Are these wired in through a relay?  It could be the extra load created by the roof lights is BBQing the switch contacts together.

Andy.:
Cheers guys, helpful as ever  :D

The roof lights have been fitted for ages now and the contacts seemed fine. I'll try a squirt of WD40 and adjusting it first.

Many thanks again.

Andy if you need a new switch it is part number "PRC2911" and they are not that cheap £20.81 + VAT.

I had this, did the cleaning bit adn it was OK but it did the same a few months later and needed changing anyway. The plunger sticks in and all the adjustment in the world won't change that.

I did have one "specialist" tell me that the only psooible solution was a new gearbox ! Needless to say I don't go there very much.
