Disco II website

Hi all,

I've found there's a dearth of Disco II info on the Web - if you want to add toys, you really struggle to find even the basic stuff like steering guards.

There are some good US sites but I wanted something more UKish.  So I've set one up.  http://www.lobsternet.org/discoveryii/ is the current home but I'll set it up on a separate domain name at some point.

It's a little basic at the moment, so if anybody can be bothered to add anything to it, please email me (address linked from site) and I'll add as much as I can.

Hi Dave, if you are able to host your own site, try http://www.dyndns.org They will allow upto 5 domain names to be pointed to your own IP for free........
You can then host whatever you like :)

I do use Disco2.com quite a lot but it's not as gear-orientated as I had in mind.  Very useful though.  I'm not just a gear junkie, mind, but there is a place for it!

pop on to www.easily.co.uk and get www.discoii.co.uk for £9.99 for 2 years with full web masking and 20 forwarding email addresses amongst other things.

I recognise quite a few, but there is also a strong US flavor, I reckon your choice of 'International' is correct.

Sorry everybody, my site's down at the moment, because of my lousy router.  I'll reboot the router later today when I'm home.

Anybody selling a decent ADSL router?

If you want a decent ADSL I would recommend the Alcatel/Thompson 510. They are just under £100 or there abouts but work well. Some of our networks have opto around 70 users on at a time on a 2Mb link and it rarely needs rebooting :)

If you have an old PC kicking around, get a cheap ADSL card, and download a copy of Smoothwall GPL.

Provides NAT routing, firewalling, intrusion detection, port forwarding, DMZ support, etc...   and is kept up to date....  and it's free.

My only connections to Smoothwall are that I use a system for my network, and that Datalas (Darren) works for them :-)

Turns out that, for once, the router is OK.  It's the Netgear Wireless access point that's failed.  They're sending a replacement.

I have to say, the Netgear stuff was great at first, but it's not very reliable.  This will be my third access point (ME102) in 15 months, which isn't great seeing as it's a purely electrical item with no moving parts.

I'd be quite interested in getting shot of both the router and the access point and replacing them with a single unit (wifi ADSL router) with all the NAT translation, port forwarding, etc, but which was made by somebody other than Netgear.

Meanwhile I've bodged the server in as a gateway for everything else, it's a crappy setup but at least it gets me back on the Net.

D-Link stuff is better, but for complete "it will last and work" I'd go Cisco ;-)

Thanks Neil.  I was in Tottenham Court Road earlier so I picked up a Linksys box, which I gather is Cisco's home brand.  I hope so anyway.  All now up and running.  Long may it continue!
