Hands-Free

Bush Tucker Man:
I didn't know whether this ought to go in the 'GPS, Radios, In-Car Electronics & Other Electrickery' forum, but it's vehicle specific...

Due to impending plans to swap/px 'S50 RAT' for a Defender, can I ask present owners about Hands-Free mobile phone kits?

I don't have much experience of these, as I don't travel in many various vehicles so fitted, therefore I just have 2 case studies to go from;

Case 1
SWMBO's 'works van' (Mondeo)
Nokia 3100
Joanne has a full Nokia kit fitted, black-box fitted wherever, speaker under the centre armrest, answer button by the gear-lever & microphone on the overhead moulding by the interior mirror.
It mutes the (standard) Sony radio/CD when a call is made - or answered

I assume this is industry standard?

Case 2
Father-in-laws 'works van' (Focus 2)
Nokia 6822
Very similar set up, just differant locations for componants

On a Defender, where would the items go?
I assume that the speaker could fit between the instrument pack & the radio & pointing at you?
If the standard radio/Cassette/Cd (whatever) is installed, can an 'auto-Mute' be fitted?

What is a suitable location for the microphone?, or are the stalk-mounted mikes more suitable? (some of the Ambulances have these)
Or is a 'Noise-Cancelling' version available?

This is not for my present phone I might add (Nokia 3310), I'll probably replace it.

pondy653:
I have a Nokia HF kit for my 6310i in my Defender, it is fitted thus;
Black box fitted behind dash
microphone on top of dash to R/H side.
Speaker in dash tray in between windscreen demister pipe and stereo mount.
Mounting Cradle screwed to lower dash in about 4 inches to right of rear wash wipe switch.
Aerial- small rubber one mounted on L/H top of windscreen (protected by snorkle)

I'll post a photos later if you want?

Tony

MTyrrell:
I have a Halfords hands free kit fitted to my 110. The control box is fitted behind the fuse box and all cables run up the loom from the fuse box to behind the dash, the phone (Sony Ericsson K700i) is mounted on the front edge of the dash top to the left of the driver with the microphone sitting on top of the dash in front of the driver. The system doesn't have an external speaker, instead it's plugged in to the radio loom and mutes the radio when the phone rings.
 There are several relay kits available for the nokia car kit to mute the radio and use the in car speakers.

Bush Tucker Man:
Thanks Matt
