About 6.30 - 7.00 is when the motorway starts to get busy, so I'd say you want to be out of the airport by 6.30 latest. It'll take about an hour and half to get to airport at that time (unless something unforeseen happens). Your problem if you have one will probably be Thelwall at 8.00 - 8.30.

I'd agree about the traffic, best bet to get back on time would be to go earlier, or if they can let them stay in a motel for the night near the airport

As you can see Auto Route Takes you M42/M6 but maybe you would consider the M6 Toll road as this is not too busy and unless you are in a 12 seater landy (they may class this as a bus) it will cost a pound or two.
You pays your money and takes you chioce, be aware that I believe some breakdown services will not rescue you off the toll road unless you pay there toll which could be £20 if a flat bed recovery is required.

Coming down the 6 should be fine, get off at J4 (2mins from me but too early!)
Coming back the traffic will be starting to build up so go back via 42 then
toll road which will take you up to J12 of the 6.

I commuted daily to Old Trafford for three years and used to leave at 7 to get to the office for 9, wasn't a slow Tdi then tho

Safe journey.
