A campaign has been launched in Norwich to rid the city of 4x4 vehicles.

A coalition of residents, students, Norwich Green Party and Norwich Friends of the Earth have formed the Norwich Alliance Against Urban 4x4s, which will begin targeting drivers from Friday.

The group will begin issuing "parking tickets" to 4x4s with information claiming a large four-wheel-drive vehicle is a poor choice for driving in an urban area such as Norwich.

Voted

I would have thought there were a lot of farming communities around there and lots of people would be using 4x4's, so I'm suprised 'we' are loosing at the moment

The Beserker:
I'm new to all this so don't know what the general consensus is but however much I love my 4x4 the small town I live in is over-run with "SchoolBus" 4x4's.. mainly Disco's, Pajero's & RangeRovers.. 90% of which don't have tow bars or are vaguely even grubby .. and have drivers who consider parking with two wheels on the kerb as off-roading..

Most do a run between School & Tesco.. do people really need such a big car for these duties ? Certainly the choice should remain personal as to which car you choose to drive but some sense and reason should prevail.. in an urban area if you don't have a reason apart from fashion should you be driving this type of vehicle ?

I got shortshrift because of these people when I bought my Disco (we live in town) - but mine works for a living towing, feeding cattle & horses from etc and I want it for greenlaning etc but for just doing the school run or driving to work ? ... Not sensible in my opinion..

I'll get off my soapbox now..

ETA - I voted against banning them though..

Voted and "we" are winning again

It's all very well people moaning about 4x4's on the school run, they're too big, guzzle fuel, etc, etc ... but, if these people didn't have Range Rovers, Discoverys, Shoguns, etc then what would they have? Chrysler Grand Voyager, BMW 7 series, etc? All much the same, just not as tall!

I cannot see any reason to highlight/pick on 4x4 cars when there are plenty of other types that are of similar size, fuel consumption, etc. The argument(s) can only be based on car ratings (size, mpg, etc) across the board.
