Please can any one tell me why my defender 300 tdi has just started to blow some ( only a little for a short time) white smoke out.
this only happens on first cold start up and lasts for about half a mile or so? I am new to land rovers and would be greatfull of any advice.

This is quite normal with Diesel Land Rovers. I wouldnt worry as long as it clears.

On the other hand it could be early symptoms of a head gasket on its way out.

Whats the mileage? Does it use any water/coolant, i.e. level dropping? Do you know if the head gasket has been replaced before?

Normally on starting you'll get a puff of black smoke but it won't last longer than the initial fire up, white smoke is usually steam meaning that its burning off water from somewhere.
