200,s have smaller headlights different grill, squarer dash binnacle stereo set low in the dash, 300,s have much better interior IMO rounded wing mirrors bigger headlights seperate heater controls for driver and passenger i suppose a bit more refined than the 200,s, engine wise they,re about the same 300 tdi is a bit quieter than a 200

Go for a 300, they look better and as already said the inside layout is better. Dont think theres much in it engine wise.

The biggest thing most people moan about with 200 models is the rubbish place the stereo goes.
Go for a 300.
Much nicer cars.

The 300 interior's pretty similar to the td5 interior. The 200 interior looks like it came out of a metro.

The rear lights are different depending on what year (not what series) you get. The front lights are different, although you can fit later ones with a bit of fettling - I think there are even kits out there.

Somethings to bear in mind...

My 300 defender popped the engine at about 115k, and the r380 box was reconditioned at 105k (by the dealer when I bought it, cost about £1000).
If you get one with a decent service history, you should be fine - the engines will go to 250k and beyond if looked after. Some of the earlier r380 boxes are a bit suspect - something to do with one of the output shafts needing cross drilling to sort out the oil delivery apparently. Most should have been sorted by now though.
Ex's father had a 200, and the only problem in 100k miles was collapsed turbo pipes which converted it nicely into a n/a! It was very, very slow
The LT77 box is meant to be quite a bit stronger than the r380, but as seph234 says - the reverse gear's up next to first, and it can be difficult to get the right one in an unfamilar worn box.

Personal preference is a 300, even after all the trouble I had with my defender 300. However, the Disco I'm looking for is a 300 series automatic v8. Hopefully the best of both worlds, especially after fitting an LPG system  8)

Hope this helps
