Mace:
I do have a thought ( don't laugh)

If Ollie never starts his motor with pre-heat then wouldn't this contribute to the smoke. Does the pre-heat give a better burn in the 1st instance rather than just relying on compression ?

Dunno myself, just guessing

Big Watty:
Ollie it's really not worth bothering about - you could, if you're that bothered, take it to a diesel specialist as I believe its something to do with the timing - mine does the same and I asked Northampton diesel they said that the risks of altering the timing were greater tahn the problem - as to not needing the glow plugs more modern diesel ie the 200, 300 and td5's don't really need them unless it's really cold

Absolutely right, preheat is there for a reason - else it would have been cheaper for Land Rover to leave it out.  Use the preheat!

I have tried using the pre-heat, it makes no difference. The engine starts straight away with or without it, and smokes just as much.
I just feel for all those in Tesco's car park that I regulary cover in smog

Ollie,

that level of smoke does sound a like excessive - when i start mine it puffs out a very small cloud of grey/black then theres nothing (until
I thrash it!)

If you speak with colintandy on here here is all clued up on fuel pump tinkering and may be able to help you.
