On my travels east this afternoon as accounted briefly in the forum known as ; 'Sleepy....'
I called into FerryBridge Services (on the junction of the A1 & M62) for a 'widdle' (getting old now, weak bladder  )
As I drove out, I spotted a pair of Pinzgauers in the truck parking lot.

It was the first time I'd seen a 6x6, 4x4's are very common.
The 4x4 had a 105mm(?) howitzer hitched up.

Notice the BFG's fitted, perhaps a 285/85 fitment??

And on my way to join the M62 down from where we live, I saw a Reynolds-Boughton RB44 with a cherry-picker fitted towing a BIG compressor

Son just out of 2 Para refers to them in the Para jargon this way. They had them because of the flat bed at the back for patrols after the 101s went away. A Defenders not easy to vacate in a hell of a hurry under fire. The 6x6 has only come in more recently I understand, though the Swiss have used them for years and they're the ones you can usually buy.

I saw a load on the way back from Bolton a few weeks ago. A mixture of 4x4 and 6x6, with 105 howitzers. I thought the army went for the Pinzgauer because it could carry more howitzer ammo than the landrover, and the layout and mechanics were better.

Been having a blinkers moment again,

The ambulance down the road is a 6x6 varient, looks good. Although the white lettering on the tyres is very boyracer.

I'll see if I can get a picture sometime.

Here is another 6x6 Pinzgauer

It has been coming out to us for the last couple of winters. It was origanally an ambulance, but the Navy had it converted to this!

And i don't know how to get the picture to come up like the others!

Most of the Pinz specials (Ambulances etc) are built in Fort Wallington, Fareham, Hampshire under licence for the army and even shipped abroad.

Fantastic site to have a wonder round and poke around all the development vehicles.

Still prefer Landies!

A certain company in Brighouse had some 6x6 Pinzgauers in to convert to ambulances for the R.A.F, I believe they have a sister company in Hampshire, anyway the local toe rags got into the yard & pinched all the BFG's
from under the nightwatchman's nose & left them on bricks
They don't seem to do MOD kit any more, can't think why
