Dave:
Well the steering box died last night on the way to work. Orderd a new adwest box from paddock today. Is there any tips on fitting any thing to look out for, are they easy to do, how long should it take :?:
Also i have orderd the drop arm as well will this be in the right position from the factory to just bolt on as it comes :?:

 Thanks for any advice

The biggest part of the job is usually swapping the drop arm, so you have that covered already ;-)   It should only go on in one position due to a keyway on the box.

Getting the pipes off can be a bit of a pain, so be careful, you don't want to damage them.

You'll need to remove the bolt through the clamp on the steering column where it joins the box (at the lower uj)... just loosening it won't do as it actually sits in a slot on the input shaft.

Get something to catch all the ATF... and refill with new.

My method is* :

Remove the pipes, drain the fluid
Remove the drop arm / drag link
Remove the pinch bolt from the lower steering column UJ
Remove the bolts holding the box to the chassis
Slide the whole box forward clear of the steering column
Lift it up, or lower it down, depending on how crowded your engine bay is ;-)

A second pair of hands is *very* useful, especially for the last bits and for re-assembly.

Reverse the above, refill with ATF, bleed the box using the nipple on the top.

i done mine a few months ago, shouldn't take too long to do but give us a shout if you want  it sounds harder than you think....honest :)

The spannerwork is easy, it's lifting the b*****d into place that kills you.  At least you don't have the oil cooler pipes like the 3.9 V8 to get in the way.

I usually find removing the drop arm with a big hammer once the box is off to be very theraputic, the nut is 33mm though, stupid size.
