Yes you could, but I'd try a sharp chisel first, less chance of damage at the right angle

If the wheel bearing has welded itself onto the stub axle then, as long as everything else is apart, don't bother cos you'll need a new stub axle anyway.
If you need it off the remove other parts then a chisel is a good starting point before working up to the grinder.

try grinding a groove into it then putting a nice sharp chisel into it - then get a BIG hammer to persuade it off.   Some heat would also probably be helpful.

hmm... brings back memories!

as davidlandy said would work, but my way would be better... more heat, and a bigger hammer!

Got the very same job to do this weekend!

Lots of heat, grind a groove into each side and use a dam good puller

Failing that, go with David and cur a groove, big chisel, even bigger hammer

Oh, and whatever you do, use some goggles!  When they go, thay can send bits all over the place

in my experience just buy a new stub axle.
Chances are if the bearing collasped there'll be a nice score in the seal seat of the stub axle so it'll let crud in,

to get it off, take a grinder with a fine cutting disc fitted & cut across the race,it makes it a long cut but go round the hub, dont cut 90 degrees to the axle face if you know what i mean, cut nearly sll the way through then get a fat sharp chissel & malky it & it should crack & come off,BUT if it has been spinning on the stub it will make a weld better than any man made device & will need a new stub axle

I chiseled one off, I like to hit things.  The the new one got stuck and I had to chisel that one as well.  Get a new stub axle, the fit is very accurate and any surface damage will make it useless.

BTW if you grind a bearing that's an interferance fit (or b****ed like this one) I find that the heat from grinding plus the weakening effect of removing metal from one part of the race will weaken it sufficient for it to be removed without cutting right through.  Alternatively a little arc welding should also make the bearing metal very brittle, just so you know

i got home earlier today so had a go at getting it off the stub axle i put a disc cut in the inner bearing race and a few whacks with a nice sharp cold chisel and luckily it just cracked and i then i tapped it off the stub axle :D. ive took the swivel off and put a new seal and bearings in so now ive just got to put it all back together tomorrow. i just hope that the other side goes ok, thanks for all the suggestion's.  joe
