As a matter of general interest.How long do you leave your batteries on charge (if you find yourself having to)in a, if such a thing exsists normal scenario for a biggish battery and reasonable charger?

Unless you have a clever charger, no more than 24 hours at a time.

If the battery isn't being used, then it should be trickle charged every so often to keep it in good condition.

most modern chargers do it for you they will even 'recover' batteries. If you completely discharge your battery you may find it wont hold it as the plates are often damaged. Thats why deep cycle batteries are so pricey.
A good selection of chargers is available from Halfords and the good ones arent that pricey now.
