Beware - cleared funds doesn't mean you have the money.
One such scam involves forged banker's drafts. These will clear in your account, but several weeks later the bank will reverse the funds when they discover the forgery. The only way to confirm these is to ring the issuing bank - but even then, when I tried this with my local Lloyds (slogan: "The Clueless Idiot Bankers") they knew less about it than I did.
The scams Woody got above were probably one of these.

even a personal cheque with cleared funds can be retracted by your bank several weeks hence. One of my customers got stung about 18 months ago, evded up about 5 k out of pocket and then had to take a loan to pay off the sudden overdraft. Their bank werent any help at all...I work for a bank by the way. Cash its the only really safe way to do it, and dont forget the scum bags could be casing your house at the same time!
