problems selecting 3rd gear

seem to have probs selecting 3rd gear from 4th -seems to be misaligned -
does anyone know what the prob may be ? :roll:

sounds like it could be fourth gear synchro? Does it engage o'k when stationary or with the engine turned off?

Sounds like the mainshaft is loose at the rear end of the box, take off the rear pto cover or overdrive, and check if the round castellated nut is tight. :(

yep in both instances it seems to engage ok just probs when travelling and changing down from 4th to 3rd - any other suggestions ? :roll:

Does it crunch going up from third to fourth as well as changing down from fourth to third,  if it only does it changing down try doing a slow gear change, pausing between bringing it out of fourth before trying to engauge third this will give it chance to slow the gear down.  If this works then it is the third and fourth gear synchro that has failed.

cheers mate - that is exactly what happens. Sometimes it does do it when changing up bu ti think that's down to me !
thanks looks like a trip to the friendly garage man for another play at being a mechanic !
