What type of oil for an off roader??

(1/2) > >>

landyman Ash:
I change my oil in my hybrid every six months and its probably only covered a few hundred miles (say 500-700)

Now its always been a V8 so Ive used cheap oil...

....now its a 300tdi what shall I do?  Keep putting cheapy in it or does the 300tdi need a good oil??

Henry Webster:
I'm afraid that I am of the "put the best you can afford in" school.

I put quality oil in the racer and replace it after every event.  Bearing in mind I only do the Hillrallies so it will have covered 300+ miles of which 100-200 would be competitive.  I currently use Castrol GTX High Mileage.

In the tow car 200 Tdi, I have compromised my usual strict regime and put a good quality (up to manufacturers spec) oil from a second rung supplier (of the sort of Comma level) and replace it regularly (3000-5000).

Cheap oils in vehicles (especially those which are pushed hard) will just lead to problems in later life.

Use the best you can.   If you use a lot of oil, as some of us clearly do ;-)  Buy it in bulk.

I use a fully synthetic oil in my engine...  I buy it in 20 litre drums for the same price that Halfords sell the equivalent in a 4 litre bottle...  same with EP and ATF.

Find your local oil supplier and have a chat to them.

LandRoger:

Henry Webster:
Would agree - bulk is the way.  All my oil is bought in bulk now - even wd40!
