Only reason I used to have a bar on mine was that it had built-in recovery points on the front of it, somewhere to hang the spotlights and I couldn't find an A bar at the time

If we're talking purely for on road use then there more than likely isn't a need for them.

Off road and in well overgrown lanes there's definately a need.

I had one on my Transit and I rear ended someone that decided they wanted the left hand filter lane (as they do in London) when they were in the right hand lane virtually stationary and the nearside lane was moving at 30mph.

Not a lot of damage to my Transit but it split the metro like a bean can.

I had a classic rangie bull bar on my series 1 for a while.
I suppose it depends on which type of bull bar it is.
