How safe is LPG offroad ?

I have just bought a 1994 Disco 3.9V8 for use off road, the car has an LPG kit fitted with 2 tanks installed under the sills, they hang down below the sills quite a bit and I am a little concerned about safety bearing in mind this is going to be used mainly off road.

Anyone else have a similar setup and experience of using off road, or general thoughts on how safe this may or may not be.

My brother has been running a Range with this set up for about 5 years, done quarries and lanes. The only problem he has is you can catch them a bit but at worst it normally just bends the floor a little ?

never had a problem on my old disco when i had it had one either side of the doors, i wouldn worry about it to much just dont do rock challenges  [-X, the tanks are pretty tough the took a battering when i had it and survived  :dance:

My mate used to have a disco with underfloor tanks, Managed to knock them off a few times but the tanks survived.  8-[

LPG tanks are way safer than petrol because of how over-engineered they are.

LPG tanks have non return valves fitted in case they become seperated. Petrol tanks don't!

if they are fitted using bands then, make them fitted better, i have a rangie with them and i have driven it off-road a few times, and the only thing that can get caught is the bands which can bend and allow the tanks to fall off, which i would safely assume is not good.
also in the same range rover ( with permission ) have gone fairly fast over ploughed land ( not a field ) and it was fine

I fitted a thick steel plate protector on my Shogun rear mounted tank as I didn't want to risk it getting damaged.

You could look into donut tanks, mount them either side in the boot.

Bit expensive  :( :( upright torroidal ?? but you could get away with one capacity of 64l (80l)

Was one of the options for me but I went for a 90l taking half the boot space  :( but have a small trailer if I need to carry things  ;)

I think the fixings and pipework are the main concern, the tanks are 6mm+ thick steel  ;)

  I ,v not had any problems with my tanks and i been all over in the 6 years i,v had the car , i just make sure that the fitting that hold tanks are in good con and paint them once a year just to stop the rust  [-o<

Used mine for the first time offroad last Saturday doing a punch challenge.

Seem to have a bit of a problem with the LPG when I was trying to get to a punch which was half way up a steep incline the engine kept cutting out
when on an angle.

anyone else had a similar problem ?

LPG is pretty much uneffected by inclines. You'll have at least 1 filter in the system (look for the soliniod which doesn't look like the rest), give it a clean and see if it runs any better.

Ran a disco on lpg never had problems with the tanks as it was in the boot. Only thing it didn't like was cold water as the evaporator was mounted on the inner wing at the bottom near the bulkhead so it use to freeze in cold water.
