Which diff guards??

Good evening all.
Along with ordering my steering guard ill get some diff protection.

Is the first as good as the second? By the looks of it the 2nd one would be a bit more robust and less likely to come off, but i dunno.

the second guard is for a sailsbry axle which is normally found on the rear of a 110. so it wont fit on a standard landrover axle.

i did a photo shoot at tixover last year and whilst my truck was on the rocks i actually knocked the first type of diffguard off. took me ages to find it. they also trap water and crud behind them which was hazardous to my paint job!

i hate to say it but i think the QT guards are the better bet, they cost a little more but my dad doesnt seem to have problems with them!....that is unless your ok with welding the first type on.

yea i saw that just searching to see if i can find one for a disco, i just wasnt sure if the 2 bolt clamp jobber would be up to it, and judging on your response...... Are the underside of the diffs normally pritty solid?

thats the otherthing, jerry was telling me when he had problems with the 2 bolt type it was with the axle caising.....this was however on a challenge truck which diddnt see an easey life! then again hes the only person who has toldme about cracking an axle casing which make me question what he says.

QT ones look good though...

I've got a couple of them round ones, used to have one fitted to the front axle.

What I did, was once fitted, I filled the front with silicon to stop it from being filled with mud!

They work well enough, gave mine a good few serious thumps with no problems.

Having said that.................................As soon as I saw some QT ones at a good price (on here I think?) I bought them and fitted front and rear!

They have also had some good thumps and they also slide over rocks without risking the bottom of the axle.

I've pulled a round one off before, plus it caused lots of rust to the diff casing.  Fit a QT one, there are copies but they don't fit as well.  Someone copied the QT but added a clamp-on pan to the front.

Probably overkill though, the biggest risks are going head on into a rock and scraping over rocks witht he casing, which is thicker than the pan, but both eventualities are covered with the QT.

Another vote for QT.

You won't find better.

For a bolt on solution the QT guards may be the best though they are still not ideal, 6mm less ground clearance can be the difference between stuck or drive through. From experience of friends using them, the slider and UJ guard on the rear diff guard don't appear to have been much help.

Other options include Gwyn Lewis's simple diff guards that weld onto the axle casing

Or alternatively just replace the standard thin diff pan with something more substantial, curing the issue rather trying to hide it. 6mm thick end caps from pressure vassals work very well and after a while using the clamp on guards, my original diff pans had cracks forming around the welds, so needed replacing anyway. I've destroyed 3 diffs since changing the diff pans and they have been fine with only scratches, where as any external diff guard could not prevent the standard diff pan being ripped open by the internal shrapnel.

I think I can live with the loss of 6mm of ground clearance !! with the other mods I'm running.
I've fitted them to all my Landrovers and never suffered any detriment for doing so.
I like the sliding action they provide and judging by the scratches \gouges in the bottom of mine, they saved my diff pans repeatedly
