200TDi into a V8 Transplant
« on: February 15, 2009, 16:57:35 »
I have just bought a 1996 3.9 V8 Discovery with the intention of turning it into a diesel off roader. I have a choice of 200TDi or 3.8 Mazda engine to go in, and will probably do the 200TDi for simplicity sake. I have done loads of diesel to diesel transplants into Defenders and Series, but never a V8 to diesel. What do I need to do?

I know I will need to swap the fuel tanks, or at least make a return pipe to the tank and remove the inline fuel filter in the rear wheel arch. I also know that I will need to wire in the glowplugs, et cetera to a relay (plenty of those in my donor vehicle(s). I know the engine mounts are different and the rad will need to be swapped.

All the aircon gubbins in it will be coming out, except the compressor.

It is also fitted with an autobox, which I am planning on keeping.

Any advice greatly appreciated, and the 3.9 V8 willl also be up for sale. £100 if you come and take it out yourself or £250 if I take it out.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I would do that, but this V8 bodywork wise is mint, with no rot at all and I know it fairly well, having put a recon diff on it for the current owner last year and a couple of other bits.

Actually doing it is no problem for me, I have all the necessary tools and space and time.

Hmm :) I was really thinking of the cheap option of taking it out myself ;)   but...  A couple of questions then if you don't mind:

1. I am assuming it is the serpentine model with a distributor? If so how good  do you feel the engine is, and what mileage, please?
2. I know you will be taking the AC compressor, but what about the bracket for it? (I have a compressor, but not a bracket)
3. Will you be leaving any of the other ancillaries on (alternator, steering pump etc)?

Cheers,
Roger

1. Its a 1995 model but it has had a newer engine at some point. I will try and find out when (going to see the seller tonight so will see if he has any paperwork for it). Just spoke with him and he has confirmed it is not a serpentine belt model.
2. You can have the air con compressor and the bracket if you are coming down to take it out mate, thats not a problem.
3. The only thing I would like off it is the alternator, but if that made the difference between you having it and not having it, then you can have it with the alternator.

Give me a bell on 0772 508 5775 if you need any more info,
