2.5 n/a to 200tdi - how hard can it be?
« on: January 19, 2008, 21:25:34 »
Hi guys,

A pal of mine has a 110 with a 2.5 n/a fitted and has chance of a 200tdi disco engine (and box if need be).

How simple is it to fit the 200 and will he need any adapter plates or owt like that?

 :help:

it just drops straight in on the original chassis mounts, and you can use the existing gearbox.

the exhaust is the toughest part to do - best to buy the downpipe from steve parker landrovers.

of course you also need to get the disco rad and intercooler, as well as the pipes etc

you will have to be creative with the intercooler and air filter pipes and cut the inner wing slightly to make it all fit, but its well worthwhile.

No probs but couldn't resist a tongue in cheek dig :)

ps fitted a 200TDI into my 90 a while ago so if theres any specifics you need just ask :) only one issue mine was a TD and the radiator mounts are too high for a 200tdi rad, ive fitted a TD rad (full width) which is much bigger and relocated the intercooler behind the rad, to be moved in front when I get a modded intercooler.

TD rad never has a problem even when muddy cos its so much bigger than the TDI number, plus its lower so the bonnet closes no probs.

Cheers Steve

Thanks guys, will pass it on and see if the new engine materialises (no doubt if it does we'll be taking up those offers of having a look and asking more questions!  8-[ )

You can alter the radiator mounting brackets so that the 200TDi assembly fits and the bonnet closes. Putting the intercooler in front of the TD radiator will make for some fancy pipecraft:)

How I did it-

if you were a fieldmouse it would be very very hard, as a badger or fox would only struggle a little.

Ive done the conversion and my mates just done it,theputting the engine in is the easy bit,its all the plumbing,(intercooler pipes, rad hoses, air cleaner and so on)thats a pain, in my opinion by the time you have messed about doin all this, new intercooler hoses, rad hoses, bit and bobs cos it does all add up you might as well drop a defender engine in,job done trust me.And if you are doin it outside on the street like I did its a right ball ache

its not hard to do the pipe work - you just need the ability to work it all out and make a neat job of it.

Its certainley harder to be able to source a defender 200tdi engine and bits.

  I like that.  Fortunately he's a bit bigger than a badger (and a fox)

it would be getting done on his driveway with no roof over it - not Ideal i know.  He's got the disco sat there at the moment which is what got him thinking about the swap.

There is a slim possibility of a 300tdi defender engine out of my 130 but need to run that past a few of you first too

Yes,if you have that ability, and tools, and time and weather on your side and a source of parts you are gonna have to butcher to make fit!!!!.......its ok if you have a four post lift, all the gear and a workshop out of the rain, but if you havent its a miserable job!!!

and yes its harder to find a defender engine in the first place but boy its worth it!!!!
