You do have to remove the timing belt, but apart from this its an easy job. Did my last one in about 1hr. Just remove the rad., alternater, fan etc. Then the lower belt pully. Remove the plastic cover. There are timing marks on the belt pully's. Line these up (I also marked them with tipex to make sure they were easy to see) Then losen and remove the belt tensioner. This allows access to the water pump. Reverse above to replace.

ps. my local motor factor supply QH water pumps for about £20+vat .

the timing belt seems slack but its how the tensioner goes , and theres a weird thing inside the spring what looks like a paper clip how does this go

Make sure the belt is tight(ish) on the side away fromthe tensioner. The teeth on the belt should be in the grooves on the pully so that you can get the next belt tooth to engage if that makes sence. The 'thing' inside the tensioner spring is, if memory serves a second spring. This is supposed to automatically tension the belt to the right tension by simply slackening off the lock nut. My eperience is that there is usualy too much rust/crud in there and its best to clean everything first the assits the spring until the right tension appears to be achieved.? As I regularly seem to be checking valves/belts/pumps etc this shouldn't be a problem. I tend to change the belt every 12 months anyway despite doing only about 2000miles a year.
