Brakes won't stop screeching.(98, 300tdi, 110.)
« on: September 13, 2007, 10:19:01 »
A couple of months ago my front brakes started screeching every time i put my foot on the brake pedal. So the other weekend i treated the landie to new discs and pads front and back, i took it out to test the brakes  and the screeching is there worse than ever. It is still coming from the front front.  I have checked the wheel bearings they are fine, and the front calipers along with pads  were replaced just 6 months ago.

 Anyone got any ideas.

Did you clean the pad guides & copper grease them, back of pads, pins etc...?
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Having read your post again...you say you have replaced all the disc & pads & replaced the calipers & pads six months ago...have you replaced the pads again with new discs or used the old pads from six months ago? ...sorry I'm a little confused :?

Did the screeching start after the calipers were changed?

are the brakes actually binding??? go for a run and jump out (when youve coasted to a stop) and see how hot the rims are......not the discs cos they will be hot and you'll burn your finger........check front and back wheels...........if they are hot have you done anything with the servo???

it could be you need to adjust the servo slightly (pop the master cylinder off (2 x 17mm bolts) and undo the locknut on the servo pushrod (13mm) then wind in the pushrod about 1/2 -> 3/4 of a turn (10mm but it should turn by hand)

check the brakes work then go for a run and see if the squealing has gone

obviously only do this if all 4 wheels are binding
Its only kinky the first time

Sorry i did'nt reply to your messages, i have been away for the weekend.

To answer your questions, no the mudgaurds are'nt catching and no the brakes are'nt binding.

I think i will have to take it in somewhere (cost a fortune).

Pads replaced with another new set bought from independent in Towcester these work fine . Reason they screech? No anti sqeal shims, kid who took out old ones threw them away.Indi garage said all good quality pads come with shims ,pays in the long run to spend that bit extra
