4x4 myths debunked

Jeep94's post made me think about some of the daft things that get said about 4x4s.  We all know about the guy in the Mercedes E-class who will moan about our 4x4s hogging the roads and being uneconomical, even though they're smaller and more efficient than his.  But I'm thinking about the more banal stuff that makes you stand there speechless.

Two to kick off...

Standing next to my 6x6 101 at a show, talking to another guy with an overlanding 101, a guy came up and told us how obviously you should never run oversized tyres on 101s because you'll wreck them and cause all sorts of problems with the suspension and transmission.  I looked at the other guy and rolled my eyes;  I'd just driven to Guinea and back on 41" tyres in a 5 tonne 101, and the other chap had driven all round Africa in his overbooted 101, without any tyre-related transmission or suspension problems.  I think the tyre-kicking guy had picked the wrong pair of 101 owners to have this discussion with and seemed totally oblivious to the evidence right in front of his own eyes.

Abby used to take my old 200tdi Disco into work and got several comments about the "raised exhaust", meaning obviously the snorkel.  OK, I know we can't expect everybody to be experts, but surely they spot the exhaust is the little metal pipe coming out of the BACK of the vehicle, not the large plastic one going into the FRONT?

Same happened to me!

I was once loading up the rear of the Jeep in a supermarket car park, when a guy came up to me and said that it was illegal to have an exhaust pipe up that high! Funny I thought as I looked down, as most other vehicles have the exhaust underneath the vehicle. When I looked back at the guy, I found he was talking about the Safari Snorkel!!!!!

Ive been told I'm driving illegally becaus ethere is no where in the UK to take a 4x4 offroad.

Sadly before I joined I did suspect this and turned down a 4.0 V8 Rangey Ambulance conversion because of it :( £300 they wanted.

Who was the TD5 Disco owner from Hampshire who was told by their main dealer that it was perfectly normal for their TD5 to be slumped down to one side at the rear - Land Rover designed it that way to make it easier for loading!  :lol:  Muppet dealer, they should be ashamed.

Got asked why do i have so many spot lights on the front of my disco ( And i only have 8 plus headlights). Just told him so i could see were i was going at night  :roll:

And had the old why do you have the exhurst coming out of the front wing when i had the rangy

The one thing that get up my nose is every 4x4 seems to be a jeep.

I get the usual comments of nice Jeep( its a disco)
we have a jeep (they drive a Kia).
seen a nice jeep the other day, turns out to be a Toyota Hilux.
at work the car park is full of jeeps (includes all 4x4's)

The funniest one i ever heard was a guy asked me if we ever used the car for what it was built for.
We'd just finished a day long laning trip and the car was filthy muddy.
I suppose it did look like a run of the mill Discovery

and every one always says to me,

i normaly say to them you never know what you might come across on the school run, :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

That would've been me then and the tyre kicker was Les Adams.  The unimog wheel thing's an ongoing debate.  :roll:


I keep getting asked if it's a Unimog, to the extent that whilst we were away we had Land Rover mudflaps made up, a guys till came up and said "is that a Unimog?" to which I replied, "no a Land Rover that's why it says Land rover on the Mudflaps" he then said "I did wonder about that"

Your right, everything that even remotely looks like a 4x4 is called a Jeep,
Its a pity that they group a classic vechile Like land Rover in with all the other rubbish !!

Legal or no, I pity the poor pedestrian who steps out in front of you and loses a limb to them.  Aren't you tempted to take them off when not off-roading, for safety's sake?  Also you may find you're invalidating your insurance.

hiya mate,

insirance knows every mod on my truck mate,wires too

and yes if i tell the truth i do take them off when going to work,but put them on the night b4 then go fill up and drive to and from where im going,

just never had any bother from any one when on there,

the reason it went them on there is the day b4 i was going offroad,and told the guy who was doing the mot and said they arnt a prob, :oops:  :oops:  :oops:
