90 or 110 - is there much difference off road?
« on: August 27, 2007, 11:54:02 »
Hi

I currently have an old disco which i use for off roading and I am thinking about changing to a defender, to be used mostly for off roading.

Ideally i would like a 110 for the extra space but i have no experience of how these compare off road to a 90.

Any thoughts would be welcome.

thanks in advance

Steve

If you are concerned in anyway about space then a 110 is the answer.
Most comp guys run 90's for improved ramp over angles, departure angles, & turning circle
As for the 110's off road ability they are excellent.  Having a wheel base only 10 inches longer than your disco I can't see you will have too many problems.  A 110 is easier to fit oversize tyres than on the Disco.
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

the main thing you'll find with a 110 as opposed to a 90 is turning circle. quite often you'll see a 90 turn straight around a corner/obstacle/etc where a 110 might need a bit more messing about.

other than that though its just breakover and departure angles etc... which arent really much of an issue. just give it some more grief ;)

thanks for the replies.

the main thing that concerns me is the rear overhang on a 110 but i guess being used to a disco (with towbar) will help!!

It would be used for greenlaning, play and pay days and maybe the odd RTV trial so if there isn't much in it then i reckon i'll go for the 110

cheers

a 110 with a big lift and big wheels looks cool and gives you back the departure and ramp over if u go high enough.

the overhang isnt much of a problem anyway, especially if you're used to a disco! we've had our 110 to places where a discovery that was with us smacked its arse end.

nah completely standard. was quite a deep ditch... 110 just about managed it, discovery wiped its arse. would probably have been ok on bigger tyres

Which is the advantage with a 110 over a Disco...sooo much easier to fit larger tyres.  I had 34" Simex Jungle Trekkers on my 110 with a 2" suspension left  8)   No cutting of arches required & looked mean

And cornered like a battleship!    I remember driving it on the gravel in Iceland and the steering wheel didn't so much control the direction, as vaguely influence it   Great truck though.

That 110 does look the Biz i'm sure I have seen it a few times up at Okehampton when the Ten Tors has been on.

Really in terms of Off-Road prowess a 110 will go most places a 90 will. As liam said it is when there is lot's of sharp turns is when the 110 might have to shunt around a bit. But then with a longer wheelbase it means that some crossaxles won't effect it, like a 90 might struggle. and for sticky stuff when one set of wheels might be in it the others will be pushing / pulling on firmer ground. and if not then a 90 isn't going to fair much better either.
And remember the Simon buck has a 110 (abeit traybacked) That won the outback challenge morocco.

Yep you will have seen it in Okehampton at the Ten Tors.  I am a team manager for Kingsbridge school...We are usually camped in the moor gate field & our marquee has a big Land Rover flag on it...like this...

Come & say hello... :D

Ahh yes. Kingsbridge. Two years ago i was team trainer / Support vehicle (perks of having the landy) for Tavistock College and we were camped where you were in that picture.

Didn't go this year as in march i broke my toe which for most of the training season and the event meant is was laid up in plaster. Sad really as that was the first event i have missed since 1999 abeit the cancelled 01 event. Been going every year working my way up from just walking the 35 & 45 to being a team manager in 2005.
But next year i'll be back helping Tavi again and the landy will be a common sight again on the moor.
No doubt we'll happen upon each other at some point during the season.

For what it's worth I find the extra few inches in the wheelbase makes my LSE much more stable for towing than the 100' RRC.

Were you at the Tavistock ballon fest at the weekend?  I went up for the evening lighting up on Sat & camped on moors in the evening

Look forward to meeting up soon  :D

I was busy the weekend. but did get a chance to go to a high point nearby to watch them flying.

Will see you about no doubt.

RRB. Yes good point about a longer wheelbase being better for speed and towing.

Really must get back on topic.

Yep sorry for highjacking the thread    got a bit carried away
Anyway the 110 is a good all round vehicle...they used them on the Camel Trophy & G4 Challenges so must be quite good off road

came from a 84 inch challenge truck to the 110 and find it superb it still suprises me when i take it out

i still find my self squeezing between things, thye only thing ive damage is the roof couple of dents that sall just not used to it being there but am now.

but yeah 33.12.50 straight on,  ive added tree sliders to the sill now so i will go back to rubbing it around things to gain a tighter turning circle but its as good at turning as things with bigger tyres on.

im glad i didnt buy the 90

I had a 110 before we bought the disco, unless you are doing winch challenges a 110 will do pretty much anything a 90 will do...

and as the others have said they look awesome with bigger tyres on them...
