Starter motor?

A new problem as occurred, had to get the AA out yesterday as I had a non starter, only joined two days ago.....best thing you can do if you own a Land Rover  :lol:

It seems the starter motor has gone as it won't even turn over & had to be tow started.

I just wanted to know if anyone had any other thoughts before I get under there stripping it out, as I hate getting dirty......unless its mud of course & I only like that on the outside of my Rangie  :wink:

The soilnids can stick and can be freed off by tapping the side of the solinoid with a hammer or long socket extension bar etc.

The long term solition os to strip clean and rebuild the solinoid provided sticking is the probem.

The AA guy tried giving it a tap with the hammer but no good.

I also tried giving it a good rock while in gear before I phoned them....nothing.

After tow starting it, I got it home, turned it off & tried it....again nothing!

They're not hard to remove, get it on the bench and see what happens if you connect it directly to a battery.

If you replace it I'd recommend getting a decent one rather than a cheap one.

I'm having trouble removing it, can't get to the top bolt!

Also found another problem while trying to trace the wires, I've got to the coil & a wire from the coil to the body has corroded so I've ran a wire to the battery from it but still nothing.

Its a strange looking wire with what looks like a lead bit on the end that attaches to the body?

I've got a strange feeling its an electrical problem as the starter doesn't even try to turn.

Anything connecting to the body is an earth...

... if you've replaced it with one to the battery... um... er...

hope I've misunderstood!

There are a goodly amount of lanes in the local areaish... I go out most with the crowd from Leicester... why not pop along to the meet on Tuesday... I won't be there but there are a couple of other lads from Cov who probably will. Hissy being the main one.

As said connection to the body work is and earth, but as long as the new wire is connected to the negative terminal then that shouldn't be a problem.

Is this wire wot was corroded, 'just a wire' or a damn thick thing that you can't hardly bend, like an earth cable should be? Or a flat braid (in a plastic sheath)? What colour is it?

If it was truly a thick earth cable, running a flimsy thin wire to battery neg will not be good enough to make it work.

It is just a thin wire, looks like it goes into a resistor that is attached to a little plate bolted where the coil bolts to the body.

Also on further inspection, it was on the positive connection on the coil so silly old me blew the fuse for the coil/ignition  :?

Done the starter now chaps, wasn't as easy as I thought though.

I could even get my arm in to undo the top bolt so I had to get my mate to come round & do it, then the second hand starter didn't work  :x

So that had to come out again & be tested which then worked  :?

Your guess is as good as mine on that one.

So it's al sorted? as I was going to chip in that when my starter was playing up it was the starter relay which in my case was on the bulkhead behind the washer bottle.  I popper a fused relay in there so I can pull it out as a security measure (hell it took me ages to find the thing).

Somebody told me the other day that Land Rovers are the most nicked vehicles in the UK............I thought he was talking crap!

Look at the stickies in the General / Bar..... usually one a week  :cry:  :cry:
