Gear box and transfer box.

I want to change the oil in my gearbox on a 2.5TD F plate 89. What I want to know is where do you fill it up? I can clearly see the drain plug but where is the filler hole. Also the transfer box is that a seperate fill? If you have any diagrams please let me know if you could send them to me or post a link would be most grateful. Do I have to strip the inside of the truck to get to it????? Thanks.  :wink:

right, transfere box fill is above the sticker that shows the ratio of the box, up side of the hand break drum, so looking from back o lanny, its on the left side of h/break drum

g/box fill is a square head that is on the side of the casing up above the transfer box at the front ( where the front prop bolts to )

right
transfer box drain is a 17mm head bolt underneath the transfere box on the contour bit underneath the inspection plate ( rectangle in shape with about 10 pins holding it on)
theres a magnet on the end to catch any bits of metal filings, dont be alarmed if its covered in filings or if theres chunks on there, its normal

main box now

theres a big bolt directly underneath just before it joins upto the transfer box, undo that then inside the tube theres a filter, remove that and clean it out

then on the side of the boc between the t/box and the g/b there is another big bolt head ( thats the main drain hole, undo that and itll gush out

expect to see a cruddy brownish colour or even white to come it
its normal, so again dont be alarmed

to fill the box i find its best be done inside cab, remove the gearstick gatier ( unscrew the gearnobs 1st ) and using abit of pipe from a funnel, pour it in, roughly 2.7 liters off top of head

your right ,but land rover use it as a gear oil  :wink:

good to know as i'm just about to fill my re-built gearbox and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to what to use

Cheers mate done the gearbox now onto the transfer box. I saw the plate you was on about but I also saw another bolt in front of this plate facing downwards what is that one for? Or are you saying I remove the plate with the 6 bolts in and then remove the drian plug. If you could clear that bit up for me would be very grateful as I dont want to mess it up.  :wink:

no theres a 17mm headed bolt at bottom o box underneath the plate, thats what you need to remove, the plate i mentioned was simply a ref point to you start from

Silly questions now that I take it is the transmission box!!!. As you could see the plate had a drain bolt by the side of it. What I want to know is should I put ep90 back in as it seems to have had it in before. Or its just where it had not been changed alot came out pretty thick! I have put ATF back in BTW

One more thing is there any kind of stuff I can put in that will prolong the life? Thanks for your help

right the front box that is black in colour which is the main gearbox which sits just behind the engine and infront of the silver box ( with the handbreak drum attatched)which is the transfer box, takes ATF

the silver box thats bolts to the black box takes ep90 gear oil

so the main box the is a pig to fill because the fill is half way up the casing and is between the trans cover ( the one thats easier to fill from inside) ....that takes ATF oil

the transfer box, which is the rear silver one that the props bolt to, take EP90 gear oil

sorry to make you sound thick so i apologise,but it seems like your confused as to what box is what, so ive put it as basic as i can for you

it run quieter...but the gearchange willbe stiff
also wont lube the places it should do as its too thick

That makes sense as I think ep90 was in there when I frist brought the motor, cheers for that all clear now. Also I have added slcik 50 gearbox stuff so that should coat the whole box. I was going to change it tomorrow but I will leave it as it will give it better protection. Cheers for all the onfo dan ;)

if you have put EP90 in the main gearbox get it drained out asap as it will knacker the box

i havent but a LR stealer did

by the time i drained the oil out the box it wouldntt change & it was so tight it was no real

Surely if I had standard EP90 then yes but ive got slick 50 in there so its gotta be better then the usual stuff hasnt it?????!!!!!

Also the previous owner used ep90 in the box, that what he has always used.  :?

The wrong oil will knacker the box...why use something different than is recommended by the manufacturers?  ](*,)  [-X
When the box starts fouling it'll be too late.  I'd drain it & flush it with fresh oil asap
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

i bet hes always used EP90 in the transfer box & ATF in the gearbox

trust those that work on landrovers that we aint pullin your leg  :roll:
