V8 coolant loss
« on: March 27, 2007, 22:38:51 »
Loosing a litre of coolant every 50 miles and a puddle on the drive overnight. Ordered some head gaskets and new head bolts. Started stripping down the top end ( even removed the exhaust manifolds ) to find the inlet manifold bolts at the back were finger tight

It was coming from the back of the engine, running around the gearbox and dripping off the bell housing. As I couldn't see where it was coming from and it's a 4.0 and now at 110K miles I suspected the worst.

Remember the engine slopes front to back! When I fitted my thermostat housing back on badly, it leaked into the inlet valley, ran down bell housing and then dripped down about 3 feet from where it was leaking from

I think the clue was in this statement.  I hope that fixes it Pongo

Looks like the coolant leak is sorted now \:D/  RRB . 1 week and the level hasn't changed a bit.

According to the manual the coolant comes up the block at the back to  the inlet manifold , flows to the front of the manifold and on to the rad. On my '95 4.0 the coolant ports at the back of the cylinder head are blanked off by the inlet manifold casting.
I guess that makes sure the coolant goes through the head casting rather than the inlet manifold.

Did LR just not update the manual or have I got a mutant manifold ? The manual must have been right at some time as the valley gasket has got holes in the right place.

Is yours a serpentine belt engine? they did have the cooling system reworked a little.  I notice most that the heater is so much better.

3.9 1991 is the same as yours

Thought the same as you when I took my manifold off but checked part numbers (part of the casting somewhere) and its the correct one for my engine number.

Yeap, had a look and mine's the same.  Can't use mine as a benchmark though as Blue is a Heinz 57.  Started life as a 3.5 flapper and now it's a 3.9 Hot wire, borg-warner T-Box and a few other toys.
