discovery wheel bearing play after 50 miles after fitting

i recently bought a disco and found both front wheel bearings had collapsed so i went and got all the bits needed and fitted them but aftter 50 miles there is about half inch end float play in them again what have i done wrong? :oops:

just tighten them up again,

you've probably no put the races fully home & running on the road has put them right in

and the above has happened to both wheels :(
also i noticed that the discs did not sit central to the calipers but i was told this is normal is this true?

this was my first thought but i am positive that they were all the way in there is no way they were half inch away from seating properly

The disc should sit in the middle of the calliper as the pads are the same thickness when new and won't fit if the disc is off centre.
How does the disc look now?
The new grease that you pack into the bearings can hold them off the correct position if you're not careful, so this maybe what has happened.

Remove the outer locknut & washer, tighten the inner nut by hand and spin the disc as you do so. Once the inner nut is finger tight, back it off by one flat and replace the washer and locknut, folding over the lock washer to hold both nuts in place.

I replaced both front discs on mine about a month ago and repacked the wheel bearings with grease. I'm now getting a slight wobble on the steering so I guess the bearings are back to their correct location and I'll have to tighten them again. So you're not alone.  :wink:

hi cheers for the advice but after reading a few threads on here i found the inner seals should be fitted into the hub and then pushed in another 4mm but i just pushed them 4mm onto the hub so prob need some new seals again now:shock:

i could of done with your info an hour ago as i have just nipped then up with a socket and backed them off half a turn instead of doing them hand tight :oops:

I normally tap the seal until the outer lip is just touching the hub, providing that's the type of seal you've got for yours otherwise I put them in so the outer edge is flush with the outer edge of the hub.

The old bearing outer is great for putting these seals in!!  :wink:

Also a wipe of grease around the lip of the seal before you put it back on the stub axle will make it last longer.  :wink:

Long term it's worth getting a small bar and filing a 4mm notch into it and use it to measure the seal depth. I found the seal was my problem too, 1st time I ever did wheel bearings. If it's not deep enough the bearings don't initial sit home and then work loose.

I've done exactly the same.  I find if you try adjusting the bearings with a new seal in place as per the manula you can't feel any endfloat, so I'd gues you had them tight up against the seal, not the bearing.  The land rover seal is an odd design with an extra lip on the vertical face.  Anyway, if the dirsk is now central and the bearings now tight then see how it goes for a couple of days.  I'd suggest you leave the seal for now, if you set it in by 4mm then it won't have worn any further than it should, if you didn't however you'l find that lip is no longer there.


BTW even with my bearings done up quite tight I still find my brake pedal dissaperas a bit when I've driven off-road untill I pump the pedal, so there is still some movement there.

cheers for the advice lads and i am glad to see i am not alone i think i might buy a manual or search on here before i do anything else lol

my next jobs are

steering pins
replace passenger door handle
find a winch remote from somwhere

although i have let the bro in law borrow it for a couple of months so no rush  :wink:
